Saw the fight last night. The commentary was annoying b/c they ignored the second half. I guess I can't blame them b/c since Hearns swept the first 6 imo, the fight looked a lot more lopsided than it was. Also, the rounds Hearns won were clearer than the ones Benitez won. With that being said Benitez in my eyes was the effective aggressor for the large part in the second half and made the fight close. I had it 8-6-1 Hearns, a point taken away from Hearns and a kdown on each end. 142-141.
Thanks Sal. Pretty close to what I had. Im a big Benitez fan as you can tell and wanted to make sure I was being unbiased.
This fight is on my to watch list this week. I was wondering about the majority decision, and the lack of conflict I generally see associated with it. I read an article earlier this week saying the other 2 judges were to far for Hearns in their cards, and while the writer thought Hearns won they felt the draw was the closest of the 3 cards in a fight that Tommy edged by landing the better/harder punches yet it still was not a lopsided affair. It has been a while since I watched it, and remember thinking hearns won, but I have noe scorecard to look back on to see what I scored it.
12-3 type of fight. Benitez gave one his most awe inspiring defensive performances, but he barely won any rounds imo.
Benitez was amazing. I never saw Hearns miss body punches, and Benitez managed to avoid the body punching also. Hearns right hand didn't even hit. Tommy was quick and Benitez was so concerned with avoiding big punches. In a way maybe Wilfred should have tried to go to war. But then he would have left himself open to punches. But as for speed Wilfred matched Tommy's speed, which amazed me. He was a quick fighter.
I think too many people's recollections of this bout are swayed by the commentary that just zoned out after Tommy seemed to sweep the first 6.
I had Hearns by at least 3 points, not even taking into account the KD against him wasn't even legit.
Wilfred was off balance and Tommy hit him with a quick right. not legit. At that point back in 1982 I do not think anyone could have knocked out Benitez.
