I think alot of fans wanted Roy Jones to lose at that point. Much like many wanted Floyd to lose before he retired. He appeared so arrogant that people want to see him get humbled. Seeing Tarver give him such a tough fight caused many to claim he was beating him....but he wasn't.
If Jones would've retired after this fight....I think people would rate him SO much higher. I didn't think there was the need for a rematch, 116-112 for Jones.
I could go with that. Good to see you actually were objective scoring that fight, 6 rounds a piece seems fair enough for some. I had it 115-113 (7 rounds to 5) for Jones. I gave Tarver rounds 1, 2, 7, 8 and 10.
I think many people booed the decision because Tarver did better than anticipated and for the first time in Jones' professional career, he was in a competitive fight where he had to work hard to pull out the win. The thing is, Tarver started great, but completely gave away rounds 3, 4, 5 and 6 not because he was outclassed, but because he was tentative and simply didn't do anything. He made it close going into the 11th, but Jones worked really hard and won rounds 11 & 12 to, in my opinion, a clear win. If Tarver had done more work in the middle rounds, he could've won.
Boring fight really, cant be bothered going back into my collection & re-watching it but from the 2 or 3 times that I did watch it, I scored an easy 6 rds each with Tarvers rds being clearer BUT.... I remember 1 of the British commentators scoring a draw too & having the exact same rds as me. Sometimes the commentators can sway you in close rds, its much better to watch a close fight with no sound, you get a much clearer picture of the reality. Thats why I wont argue with any score for this one like I would for the DLH/Mosely II or EM/MAB II fights. Id like to think Roy deserved it as I like him much more than boring Tarver & rank him WAY higher in a primes fashion. :good
