I just rewatched the rematch of Mike McCallum against Sumbu Kalambay. I thought McCallum won the first half of the fight while Kalambay came back and won the last half. Some of the rounds that were for Kalambay were reminiscent to the first fight. Very hard fight to score but I think I had McCallum edging it by a point.
Brilliant fight between 2 excellent technicians. How did you guys score this fight?

I had it a draw or slightly to McCallum, I can't quite recall. I really, really enjoyed it. Terrific skillful contest.

Probably my favourite mutual technical bout.

Ive scored it 116-112 Sumbu and 115-113 McCallum before, really depends what mood you're in and whose work you're digging more on the day.

    Wonderful, wonderful contest.

I've watched the fight 4 times and always come out with a score of 118-110 Kalambay.

Wow. So you had McCallum winning nothing after the first two rounds? :huh

Are you sure your not thinking of the first fight?

I think I've had McCallum winning it by 2-3 pts. In short, McCallum dominated the first half more than Kalambay did the second.

I'm like Flea in the sense that I've scored it a number of times and come up with different cards depending on what I'm looking for. I think I worked out an average from however many different scores and it ended up about 2 points in favour of Kalambay. I wouldn't gripe much with anyone who had it to Mike by a point or so, though on balance I generally preferred Kalambay's work.

It might sound patronising, but I think McCallum did ok to actually make it close at all considering how badly he got banjoed first time around and how Kalambay was such a stylistic foil for him. Fought a better, slightly smarter fight than first time and had gotten used to fighting at 160 whereas Kalambay was noticeably diminished from 3 years earlier, if still very good.

It's one of those fights you'd expect most trainers to keep a copy of to show to any of their young prospects, so it sums up to me the age we live in that of all the different 'trainers' I've spoken to mostly around the Midlands and North of England that hardly anyone has heard of Kalambay or seen him fight.

I scored it 115-113 McCallum. As others have said, it's one of those that's sort of left up to what you like to see on a given day. One of the more difficult to score.

Mike was making a seemingly conscious effort to not start slow. That decision likely won him the fight.

Hmmm, I'm going to have to re-watch it this week. I originally scored it for McCallum clearly. But maybe my judgement was clouded by the fact that the first fight wasn't too close and I wasn't expecting much the second time.

I'm surprised how many of you feel it was a two-halves sort of bout.I still think the British commentary was fairly poor in this fight, the majority of the rounds in the fight were evenly contested and tough to score yet they had McCallum winning everything until about the 7th round and even talk of a stoppage circa 5 to 6.holdsworth i think it was calling out lampley-esque lines like "one jab, two jabs, THREE JABS" or "really working the body here" when the majority of it was missing or not landed cleanly.

Then he must have noticed he was going over the top and started to balance things out by making out Kalambay was coming on like a freight train which wasn't really true to that extent either.

Not an easy fight to call live, to be fair, these kind of fights never are.Best rewatched with some of the old Ludwig Van on instead, or something like that;)
