Sturm absolutely won to me, dlh looked completely gassed and clueless down the stretch of that fight.
just read Oscar's biography and in he said that he felt he lost this fight. He even said to Sturm at the final bell "good fight, you won it"
It was the first Vegas fight I ever went to and I loved the fight but there are a lot of myths attached to it. I scored the fight 7-5 Sturm as it was extremely close. Too many people jump on the band wagon and make out Sturm dominated De La Hoya - BULL****. He made Oscar look bad for LARGE periods of the fight but pissed about a lot during the 12 rounds. He glued his hands to his head and flicked out pitty pat jabs, which were scoring, but Oscar was given credit for his body work which was very consistent throughout. The wrong man got the decision but it was not the runaway victory many people say it was.
That fight was just bizarre. Oscar came out like it was a showcase. He used up all his punches right away and threw and threw and threw. He's NEVER fought like that. By about round 5, he seemed like he had nothing left. It's actually suprising that Sturm didn't just try to house him. I suppose we should give Oscar some credit for that. Maybe the early work prevent Sturm from getting off. In any event, it was a disappointing night on many levels. Oscar coming in out of shape (and unsexy), a bad decision and more or less, $49.95 I'll never, ever see a gain.
Yet there are very few threads on this subject, very people in the Boxing community that mention this fight. However, Castillo/Mayweather is a LIGHTING-ROD for the word ROBBERY!!! And there is NO WAY in hell DLH won 5 rounds vs Sturm. That was an 8 rounds to 4 fight the first time I watched and the 45th time I watched it.
Sturm clearly won. Funny, I went from hating Sturm and wanting DLH to just pound on him. To liking him because of his effort against DLH, surprising the hell out of me. To not giving a damn about the guy because of every other fight after the DLH fight.
This was a pretty cut and dry affair. Every round had a clear-cut winner, so I'd find it very difficult for someone to score the fight for De la Hoya or have it even. I had it 115-113 Sturm.
