How do elite heavyweights spar without knocking each other out all the time?

They must do touch sparring for the most part or drills, cause when they go into a real fight guys like Joshua are knocking you out first good punch he lands. I'm really curious as to how serious Joshua and Klitschko's 'sparring' was.

Joshua sparring Olympic silver medalist Joe Joyce as example

The same way everyone else spars. The guys are bigger they can take a good shot. The only rule in sparring is if you get a guy hurt, you don't finish him.

It is sparring, it is a learning and putting into practice drills, etc session, over seen by trainer.

In my experience it is the novices who make it a war, one gets tagged harder than expect and its then game on.

The days of Jack Dempsey going to war with sparring opponents are gone.

One of Dempseys title challengers a heavy handed fighter called Luis Firpo, who when pressured to do sparring in camp (he prefered to fight often, rather than train as he earned dollars that way) engaged some sparring partners, paid them minimum pay and told them if they got hurt in sparring, they had to pay their own doctor bills.

This. Sparring should be mostly sharp shooting, since sparring is a great place to test things, stay sharp, and learn. Wars should be left for actual matches when it counts. I've seen so many amateurs, who've used up their body in gym wars.

Profesional boxers usually don't go 100% at sparring.
    Actually no one should.

20 Oz gloves and very padded headgear. Plus most of the time they don't go 100%, the elite heavyweights anyways due to risks of injuries like cuts ect.

They give respect to take into account it is sparring. Therefore they ensure they do not fight to close the show, if one is seriously stunned.

It depends, if you're a paid sparring partner you most likely will get ****ed up. I seen Mayweather stop 2 different guys in the same round.

I have a friend that was in Wlad's training camp, he never got stopped but he said Wlad tried to stop him and that Wlad ko'd a few other guys and sent them home. Wlad used 20oz gloves.

In a perfect world this would happen but when ego and an audience is involved it usually go out of hand.

That's why most pro's only spar when they have a fight to save their body.

There are several tapes of Sonny Liston sparring.....with Ernie Terrell, and several other guys. Liston was pulling his power punches...and just practicing placing them correctly.

in sparring u can signal out anytime. As soon as it gets too rough, you give the signal to stop.... if your opponent keeps hitting you, his sparring partners wont want to work with him/her anymore, so the onus is on
the pro to follow those rules.

you dont hit as hard and as damaging, since you dont aim to stop someone hellbent on it to earn your keep.

in a pro match you dont have such options unless you want to pick up a loss.
