How do fighters accumulate punch power when they were previously non-punchers?

    Amateurs 3 round fights big gloves defensive style due to dumb point system. Also in th Olympic fights go the distance cause its the best level . In the pros the first 20 or so fights are guys below you as you climb th ranks meaning you now have no head gear a scoring system where you can be more offensive real gloves not pillows and long fights where you can get more time to stop a guy especially if they dont have the stamina

    Tbh I subscribe to the theory that punch power is one of those traits that you either have or don't have. Similar to chin and heart. You can't train those either. Extensive training can give you some power but you'll never make a Valero out of a Malinaggi nor a Tua out of a Kevin Johnson no matter how hard they train.


    Although I know little of Witter and of Hasegawa, I believe these fighters you mentioned always had that punch power but for whatever reason either preferred to fight more as slick boxers in the past and are now perhaps changing their style.

    It's a combination of improving punching technique and in ring awareness, knowing when to go for the kill. Nathan Cleverly is a good example of this. First 13 fights - 3 stoppages. Last 6 - all stoppages.

    This is probably one of those questions for which there isn't one simple exclusive answer.

    Strength training, technique, moving up in weight (or, in some cases, down) - these could all potentially be factors in a given anecdotal example of someone significantly improving their punching power.
