Do not strive to be successful, try to become "special"
Unique offense combined with simple but bullet-proof defense

a lot of good training and some great inspiration from all the old greats and dedication, there are no easy way, just hard work and help from a good trainer.

A martial arts student went to his teacher and said earnestly, "I am devoted to studying your martial system. How long will it take me to master it?"

The teacher's reply was casual, "Ten years."

Impatiently, the student answered, "But I want to master it faster than that. I will work very hard. I will practice everyday, ten or more hours a day if I have to. How long will it take then?"

The teacher thought for a moment, "20 years."

yeah, this question is a bit insane. There's no simple answer. There's no way to go up to a random person and just explain to them how to be a good boxer, I think.

Good, just train alot, spar alot and use your head not your braun to win fights. Greatness. requires a high amount of dedication. But more importantly a series of skills that can't be taught nor acquired
-determination - ever see arturo gatti vs micky ward, he got up from a liver shot, pure determination and willingness to not quit. You want to be great there will be a time when you have to take your ass off the canvas, take a beating and fight back when you feel like you want to quit
-Persistence - you have to get up and train everyday, and when you get your first payday, you have to defer enjoying your money the way most of us would as it would interfere with your training. Most boxers never do this for a prolonged period of time.
-heart- willingness to fight when losing
-chin - ability to take a punch
-fearlessness - Sometimes you will fight an opponent who is taller and hits harder than you can. And the only way to win is to go in and get close and often get hit.
-timing - A good timed punch is the difference between winning and losing a fight/ If you can time your opponent, no matter how fast or strong, you can in theory always have a shot to win. A well timed punch to the chin or liver can turn a fight around
-Boxing instincts - you need to have the right instincts. YOu will get hit with a shot where you do not know where you are. Will you run, dance, hold your opponent or cover up like a turtle. The right strategy will depend on your opponent, the referee and a host of other things. Sometimes a guy gets rocked tries to hold on and gets dropped, sometimes a guy runs and gets nailed with a flying punch, sometimes a guy gets drilled and covers up and the ref stops the fight. You have to know what is the right thing to do in the moment and when to do it exactly.
-Not following your instincts- sometimes your instinct is to destroy an opponent when he gets close, sometimes you keep your hands up and don't see the punch coming. Alot of timing your instincts are wrong in boxing and you have to do what is logical not what you feel is logical
-endurance - it is an endurance sport
-pacing - you have to be able to pace yourself, just because you aren't punching doesn't mean you aren't going to get tired, taking punches take away your energy so you better be able to pace your opponent.
-ring vision- ever heard of court vision in basketball, or field vision for a quarter back in football. To be great in boxing, you have to be able to look out at your opponent and his defense and come up with a good on the fly strategy. Just like tom brady does in football or michael jordan does in basketball. The difference is tom brady isn't getting punched in his face, he gets 30 seconds, and time outs and 30 second breaks between each play and halftime and quartr time breaks you don't.
-feinting - Its a truly important skill
-strategy- boxing is a sport of strategy you need to often make up winning strategies on the fly, you have a guy coming at you trying to knock your head off and you need to come up with a way to beat him. At the higher levels this may be easier since you have them on tape, but your first dozen profights you won't have that advantage generally.
-Matchmaking - you have a manager who matches you against fighters you can beat. I think of Rigondeaux Rios. Highly predictable outcome, Rios manager should have never matched him against Rigondeaux, because he had zero chance to win.
Luck- It just takes 1 punch to send you blind or send a blood clot to your brain and wind up in a wheel chair. It takes nothing for you to injure yourself in training and get an injury prone wrist or a busted up hand that turns
your career upside down. And just because you are a great boxer doesn't mean you will be given a chance to show it or make money from it. Someone like gamboa or lara are arguably some of the top 10 boxers around but they aren't making the money. Especially Gamboa, boxing has tons of politics. In basketball you just need to be great, in boxing you need to be great and lucky. Turn down the promoter who is ripping you off, underpaying you and overcharging you, refuse to throw a fight and you can be blacklisted forever

-To be great requires you to really be a great thinker. Put together all the above skills, and you might just become the next Joe Louis.
