How do people have the nerve to say Harry Greb would be competitive in any era?

    Today's journeymen would pulverise him.

This is a prime example of old time boxing fans having a brain full of nostalgia.

He wouldn't be competitive in all eras. He'd totally dominate some.

Instead of verbally abusing me, why don't you tell me how that man would compete with his modern day equivalents, considering the obvious gulf in speed, skill and technique?

Fair enough. How do you think a prime Greb fares against this era?

He'd be undisputed world champion at however many different weights politics allowed, pound-for-pound #1. Probably.

Is it not apparent to you from the above video that Greb is much more sloppy and slower than today's fighters, and doesn't punch with as much power. He flails wildly. If I sparred like that my coach would tell me to go home.

That's what I see when I look at this video. But clearly you see a techincal and dangerous fighter who would dominate Mayweather/Pacquiao etc?

The difference in what our eyes are telling us is massive. You have 50k posts on this website. Do you think that as a boxing fan who is so enamoured with the old style fighters and so beloved of them, that your judgement as to their skills could be skewed?

I am not hating, just asking what I feel are legitimate questions.

How would Floyd Mayweather deal with regular fighting against the best? Hiw about even earlier, with unlimited rounds, smaller gloves?

In fact, this era is one of the least prepared to take on all the others IMO. Floyd?! Pathetic comparison.

Is it not apparent to you that the above video is not even sparring? It is aping for the cameras. It is two men being told not to hit each other properly whilst remaining anchored to the spot so the stationary camera can record what they are doing in preperation of filming actual fights.

It is like coming in here with film of Ali boxing the stuffed Gorilla he carried around in Manilla claiming that Ali would not be competitive based upon that footage. It is absolutely no different from doing that in any way.

True. Greb was a fraud.Someone like Sylvester or Zbik would beat the sh*t out of him with their skill and power. Got it, you may leave now.

btw, where is the "wild flailing" in that video? I see about three jabs from Greb, maybe two lazy straight rights and that is all the punches I see him throw?

This is a bit of fun and light hearted training.

What do your eyes tell you about Loughran, Tunney, Walker, The Gibbons' Brothers?

What about the size of the gloves, the regular fighting and harsh environment?

What about all the technical regressions of today's fighters?

The short footage of Greb sparring (he's the skinny 1 jabbing not the 1 looking like a ******) shows good lateral movement and use of the jab. I contend from this he was likely a good technician with a high level of workrate stamina - we know the latter but I'm guessing his skills were better than reported.

However I do think boxing progressed from the 1920s, it's popularity went up after young boxers saw the massive amounts of money Dempsey was making

He's probably wouldn't lose and draw against a gatekeeper he had 15lbs-20lbs on though

Loughran is sort of like Henry Maske

    :thinkwho's this?

as for the thread, as has been said, if you're using this video as the sole indication of grebs skills he doesnt look like much. however we have his INCREDIBLE record and the INCREDIBLE records of the hundreds he conquered. even if we don't have footage of him, we have footage (as flea said i think) of tunney (who he dominated) and walker (who he dominated).

In the end I think his skill set is one of the few universally translated repetoires in history and like benny leonard, duran and probably langford, would see him at the very top of the boxing world no matter when and against whom he fought
