i see him as a giant killer, beating up on bigger guys. when he was focused, he could find a way to beat anyone. he was a known party animal so who knows how much better he could of been. with monzon i have him as one of the greatest latin fighters and in the top 5 of all time 1. Sugar Ray Robinson 2. Muhammed Ali 3. Joe Louis 4. Sugar Ray Leonard 5. Roberto Duran/ Carlos Monzon
Several fighters have achieved more...Even as a Duran fan I dont have him as the greatest fighter even based on that. But I have over 50 of his fights on film and from all the many fighters I have seen he is a top tier boxing talent IMO...meaning he should be talked about next to names like Robinson, Leonard, Charles, Ali..guys of their calibre.
He is totally overrated, which does not mean he is not great. But top #5 p4p no way. Off of what? His lightweight reign? He was a warrior and demolished guys and had some hand speed and great inside fighting, but his reign was not great if you look at his opponents. His opponents at lightweight were a bit overrated.
Obviously his win over a top20 alltime fighting above his best weight is what shoots him up in a lot of people's lists...You couldnt justify a ranking like that just based on his lightweight form, clearly. However I generally find people completey write off lightweight era as "weak" just because they know little about it..It wasnt the strongest there ever was but it was full of very good fighters who were prevented from further greatness by a certain man dominating the division. What people often overlook is that Duran had already beaten a future featherweight great and an only recently dethroned superfeatherweight great before he was even champ.
it's kinda like if vitali actually defeated lennox and lost to him in a rematch. roberto beats sugar ray the first time and loses the second, both in their primes. if you think about it and actually analyze what he's acomplished without being biased, you might understand why the general public easily have him as a top 5 of all time. no shame a natural 135lber losing to hearns, who's easily one of the best 147-154lbers or losing to leonard in the rematch, which was kinda expected the first time around, but didn't happen. he also beat the man who twice destroyed his conqueror in iran barkley, who duran was also expected to lose. and that's even without counting his long reign of terror at 135 and destroyed the only fighter to beat him at 135 who was more than decent in esteban dejesus. its like if wlad actually would of gotten his revenge on sanders instead of vitali doing it for him. no hate for the klits, but how can you rate the klits so high and have roberto as if he's a clubfighter? :bart oh well everyone's entitled to their opinion just think yours has always been abit biased on duran for a while, don't know why, but i just tell it how it is and go with what they've accomplished in the ring.
People often overlook the fact he beat many top 140 pound contenders in his non-title bouts in between his lightweight defenses. Some would go on to hold titles, some had already. But mostly people just dont actually watch his fights at lightweight and the other fights that his opponants had to truly gauge the quality of opposition he was facing..boxrec cant tell you that. By watching these fights you can clearly see the level of in the ring dominance, skill and physical ability that Duran had and not to many else did.
