The question is how would Shane Mosley or Pernell Whitaker or Chavez have done against that same lightweight reign of Duran. I just think Duran's weaknesses for cutting the ring off on opponents was not as exposed as later, since he did not have the guys at 135 who could do it as effectively as in the higher weights. Do I think Duran was less effective at a higher weight? Sure, but I do not think he was this inept person higher and this great great guy lower.

This Duran incident always tickles me -- epitomizes who he was:

When Duran was training to fight Carlos Palomino at Madison Square Garden, he worked-out at Howard Albert's gym, an old factory loft in the Garment Center, just a few blocks from the Garden.

It was summertime and sweltering. Every Latino worker in the area-- and their families -- would go to watch their hero train at lunchtime.

The gym was a steam room -- jammed cheek-to-jowl with the adoring. They pressed so close, Duran barely had room for floor exercises. After that, he jumped in the ring to shadow box.

Spanning what looked like a crowded subway car, you could see chests swell – faces beaming with pride. Plump mothers holding babies in their arms stood at the ring apron, while their little ones looked up saucer-eyed at this God.

In the midst of all of this, somebody in the back -- unbelievably! -- kept shouting at Duran in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU!

Duran paid him no mind and continued to shadow box. But the heckler was relentless: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU! "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU!”

Finally, Duran fixed him with a glare, stretched as far over the ropes as he could -- just above the glowing faces of mothers and tykes -- yanked down his trunks, grabbed his nuts, and roared in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS CAN SUCK MY ****!

Roberto Duran was the greatest lightweight champion of all time. I remember his fights with Esteban de Jesus, awesome!

He never gave Ken Buchanan a rematch, that should mean something.

Duran had just turned 29 by the time that he fought SRL and was a natural welterweight by then as his body matured. He had been fighting exclusively at WW for 2 years prior, and was weighing well over lightweight for quite some time in between title defenses at lightweight.

I don't know why the hell you have to always start in with the "you don't know what you're talking about" ****. I have already said that Duran was a great fighter. There isn't any doubt about that. I don't even argue with anyone who has him listed as the #1 Lightweight of all time.... and I never will argue that because a great argument can be made for Duran at lightweight. I think a great argument can be made for others though too. However, I do think that people overrate him on a overall ATG list. He lost to too many fighters while still at the top of his game to be considered top 5 all time, IMO. That doesn't mean that he isn't great... of course the man is a legend. However, top 5 is EXTREMELY hard to get to... and you don't get there by losing to all of the best fighters that you faced, as well as some not some great fighters. Also, not when you have been blown out in 2 rounds, and forced to quit out of frustration due to being outboxed in an embarrassing fashion. Once again... THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT DURAN WASN'T A GREAT, AMAZING FIGHTER! What it means is that the man is not top 5 overall ATG. It's honestly not even a sure that that he was top 5 overall during his own era. That's just being honest. I see no way to reasonably rank him above SRL on any overall ATG list.

This isn't a matter of like and dislike. I love Duran, the man was a beast. I love to watch his fights, and he was a great fighter. I just can't believe how high this man is ranked by many people. I have seen people rank him over Armstrong, SRR, ect... it's just crazy to me.

Sweet Pea and Chavez both probably would have dominated it just the same, just how Roberto would have been the man during their reign against their opponants...Im not sure what you mean by that as both were as good as Roberto and I would never dispute that.
Who really knows with Shane but I sincerely doubt he would have been able to make the limit for as long as Duran did.

Roberto's ability to cut of the ring was excellent in his prime..He fought many guys who were known for their defensive ability and some were just straight up runners.
    Ernesto Marcel
    Esteban DeJesus
    Ray Lampkin
    The Viruiet Boys
    Saoul Mamby
    Vilomar Fernandez
    Zeferino Gonzalez
    To name a few...

Buchanan was the exchamp. Why didn't he give him a rematch? Especially the way the fight ended. I'm sure Buchanan wanted one. I've read that Duran has stated that Buchanan was the toughest opponent he ever faced.
