How do Robinson's close controversal fights in his prime affect his legacy?

Well if there's losses against lesser opp, like enough to really slide the ratio of his great wins:bad losses, then i'd have to rate him accordingly. His resume in that respect is immaculate though, it must be said. There's no bias PP, i don't actually know if he's the greatest, the resumes of one or two other fighters such as Greb and Langford must be considered, but on the point of performances, i do think Robinson was the best from what i've seen so far.

Well, just about all his fights with Gavilan and LaMotta was fairly close. The last fight against LaMotta is of course an emphatic win, though.

But he did beat Zivic quite comfortably, didn't he?

The thing is on the flip side they maybe facing opponents who's bodies are breaking down too and there is usually a fair amount of padding between facing top contenders, ie fighters you cant really lose to. Then there is the fact when fighting more often they are getting extra credit for the extra wins but not receiving criticism for the defeats. Now some defeats/draws/SDs could be due to 'not being 100%' but some maybe just the opponent was all wrong for him

I am torn on the matter but what it boils down to for me is the following position. Robinson and Greb have great wins and bundles of them but certainly weren't unbeatable in their own time, let alone against every ATG that has ever existed.

I see what you're getting at then PP, you don't like how the consensus is that absolutely nobody has a chance of beating Robinson or Greb in a hypothetical match-up. It pisses me off when people do that with other atg's, i feel you there, but i do kind of let it slide when it comes to Robinson tbh.

Supreme as he was, you probably shouldn't. A 5-10% enhanced Bell would probably after all beat him at his WW prime...

I also think Janitor has a great point when he says that there probably are Nortons in every generation of contenders, but that they just don't get to meet their Ali.

But would have Robinson upped his game in that case? I'm suprised there was never a rematch (rubber) given the nature of the win. Does anyone have a report of the first fight?

I think this is from the fight in question and a great action shot

But, yeah, there's not a welter in history I would make a favourite against Robinson.

Garfield wrote a very eloquent post about it just yesterday, I think. According to him both seemed to give it their all, and why wouldn't they? This was probably somewhat of a career decider for Robinson. He had had to wait a long time for that title shot, and who knows how long he'd have to wait for the next shot if he had lost.

A prior post from Dan Parker addresses the two Gavalans fights rather well and the rematch reads like an ass whipping.
