Was he a boxer, puncher, combination boxer/puncher. Or did he tend to employ all methods from time to time?

Lewis did not have a fragile chin. He got knockout twice because of over confidence and/or arrogance.

Lewis would follow tactics. If you are 6' 5" tall with a huge reach advantage why fight on the inside against a Tua? But if you are fighting a giant like Grant, then come inside....

Lewis fought what was in front of him and providing he respected his opponents abilites he always got the job done. In the era that he fought against the opposition that he met, he would of been found out more than twice if his chin was anything other than respectable.

I would say boxer/puncher, but he was very versatile.

For instance, in the Tua fight you'll see him fight off the backfoot for 12 full rounds. Whereas in the Grant/Golota/Mercer/Klitschko/Morrison/Rahman II fights you'll see him fighting much more agressive, sometimes fighting in the trenches.

And then there are some fights which are in between like the Holyfield fights, or safety first fights while adapting a stalking style, like McCall II.

He can adapt to many styles, but as was visible in the Mercer and Klitschko fights, he would do better to fight the iron chinned opponents from a distance instead of mixing it up.

I think of him as a puncher with a stylists mentality. He almost needs to be punched out of that mentality. This is why he is such a nightmare to beat. Hurt him and he starts fighting.

a puncher who learnt how to box. i think thats how it should be.

can go on the inside very well against big big men and still come out on top and can fight on the outside due to his heavy left jab, reach and size

whaty is there to overate he is a perfect build for a heavy. taller than the average but not freakish till it's a disadvantage hyoowge reach big right hand a jab that he used as a tool to prod to blind them and to push them back. and he had underated heart he could of just ran in the vitali fight but instead went toe to toe with him.

Manny Stewarts Tall Heavyweight style. (Hes implying a very similiar one with Wlad but more hooks than uppercuts, but still...pretty close, Search and Destroy robot style like all of Mannys fighters.)

So that's why he was only floored twice in 14 years, with that fragile chin of his.

Good observation. I've often said that Lewis sometimes resembled a 240lb Thomas Hearns, especially after Steward got hold of him.

Guess you never saw the Golota, Grant, Briggs or Rahman II fights, you might want to watch them before opening up your yap and looking like a complete idiot. Better yet, perhaps you should start watching golf.

As to his style, the Ring Magazine said it best when they said he could do it all. Take out a fighter (Grant, Golota), control distance (Tua) go in the trenches (Mercer, Vitali), outbox a fighter (Holyfield), systematically beat down a fighter (Tyson). He may have occasionally fought defensive, but he usually found a way to win. And yes, for the most part, especially with Emmanual, he was a hit and not get hit type of fighter, which is actually the objective of boxing, contrary to popular belief.

Come on I lost count of how many times Lewis got roched, hurt, whatever U wanna call it.
Thats why for such a big man he was so safety first, because he knew himself he didnt have a great chin.
The nut hugging on Lewis on this forum is awful.
