Take a fighter like Pep or SRR. Fighters during this era fought extensively, sometimes every few weeks. Conversely, fighters of today's era fight 2-3 times a year and have long training camps to prepare. So I have two questions: 1. When watching- and most importantly critiquing fighters of bygone eras, do you take their activity level into account? Are you as aware as you should be that these fighters were often times not fighting fresh, or nowhere near as fresh as fighters are today? 2. When placing a fighter of today into a fantasy fight with fighters of past eras, are you aware that if the fight were to take place inside of that era that fighters would likewise lack time to prepare like they do today, and would be coming off of fights from the recent months and even weeks? The reason I ask is that I often times see people evaluate and discredit fighters from the past and think that they are not taking these factors into account. Mayweather, for example, has recently complained of being exhausted and fighting with hurt hands, etc. This is after a mere fraction of the fights which a fighter like Robinson or Gavilan fought. To conclude, when we analyze mythical h2h matchups, we have to account for activity level. Its simple, either the fighter you are watching from past eras would be fresher than our tapes suggest, or the fighter from today would be more exausted and ring worn.
