There are a fair amount of Joe Calzaghe huggers and haters on this board, and the British one. So how do you feel someone would beat him?
Bernard had a pretty good blueprint I thought.. he just wasn't able to execute long enough because of the adapting style Joe used. My guess is you beat Joe by being young, hungry, a crisp puncher who throws in bunches with a good body attack and you look to win the fight before the 9th round, as Joe usually sweeps the final six. Got to come out aggressive and ensure that Joe has something to constantly think about so he isn't making adjustments and finding ways to beat you.
I think you have to be able to switch tactics every couple of rounds. It often takes Joe a couple of sessions to work his way into the bout, therefore it is important to ensure you leave these rounds with a 10 against your name - Kessler and Hopkins were able to do this. Start by going toe to toe and fire in the body shots etc - but don't stay too long on the inside because that is where Joe seems to be at his best. Also, don't bother trying to out-jab and out-move him, because it ain't happening.
You have to be able to take him into deep waters late. A guy like Andrade could possibly tko Joe late
calzaghe doesn't have the best defense or does not have a pretty good defense. Hopkins was doing a good job, he was pretty accurate with his punches. Now if he was only throwing that much or if hopkins has an average or slightly above average workrate he would.
How can you throw more than Calzaghe though? Whoever said Andrade would do the job wants lopping though!
I don't know why people kep saying to work the body. As far as I know he's not weak there, and if you concentrate on that you'll get caught coming in.
It's hard to cut it out in single terms because Calzaghe is so versatile but I imagine Kessler with a proper run-up and a coach in his corner can show you.:bart
I realize that it looks bad on paper but if you can analyze a fight decently then you know what im talking about. Calzaghe is obviously the favorite, but Andrade actually has an outside chance to tko Joe late. And seriously, im not kidding
Equal amounts of stamina, more height and good pop. Catch him coming in and tie him up. Repeat. More easily said than done, though, especially since Calzaghe will adjust with his feet and work his way inside in a variety of ways. But still, this seems to be the best bet. Box on the backfoot, dictate when you stop and bomb, and clinch once he gets close.
I love Andrade, and think he could beat Jermain Taylor, but Joe has too much stamina methinks? Not to mention a good set of whiskers.
