Calzaghe has what I like to call a "boxer-swarmer" style: he can box well behind his jab and combinations, but can also fight in an aggressive style that emphasises workrate and speed over power. To beat him, you need the power to take out (or at least deter) a swarmer while having the skill to deal with him as a boxer. I think it would require a hard-hitting puncher with excellent movement and fast hands with punches coming from awkward angles. He would have to be ready to go 12 rounds and would have to be good at getting breaks either by clinching or moving. Despite his power, he would have to be patient enough to wait for the right spots and not swayed by the crowd. Basically, to beat Calzaghe, you need an unusual combination of power, skill and excellent timing. A prime Roy Jones Jnr. would fit the bill perfectly, especially since I don't think Calzaghe ever had the power to crack that chin. Bob Foster could do it at light-heavyweight, as could Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore; I would maybe give Michael Moorer a shot, but he was never tested against the best light-heavyweights. I'd also give (of all people) Michael Nunn a good shot. Nunn had power and the skill to deliver it often, combined with the ability to stink the house out when he wanted a nap.
I know why it's tempting to think this but don't forget that Calzaghe loves it when people come forward at him, swinging. He can just swarm them, move his feet to get into position to hit them, move his upper body to avoid the punches and carry on. It would be a hard fight for Calzaghe, of course, because he couldn't take a breather for a second, but Calzaghe is a high workrate high-stamina fighter. I think Andrade's style works right into Calzaghe's hands. Tough fight physically, but fairly manageable strategically for Calzaghe, I think. The only big worry for Calzaghe, I think, are his hands. If he breaks them keeping Andrade away, he'd have to depend on his footwork even more, but that's not a problem for Calzaghe. I think Calzaghe would be the matador and Andrade the bull, in this fight. The bull rarely wins. No?:good
I think the spurts of activity that Dawson has something of a blueprint. It is hard to see Dawson himself do it, because he seems to switches off every couple of rounds. If he maintained high levels of activity and threw a lot on punches, I think he would have a big change to win a decision.
One could always do what Johnny Cash did to Maximus in the Gladiator, stab him in the dressing room and conceal the wound. That would work.
Hmmm...Yeah, my analogy is indeed flawed there. Johnny Cash fell into a burning ring of fire, cheating Maximus or not. I will think of another way to take down Zag and get back to ya.
IF Kelly Pavlik changes his nickname to "Jermain Taylor" and Chuck Giampa is judging, He's already won the fight on one judge's card.
:rofl :rofl :rofl :deal YEAH!! I will notify team Pavlik and see what they think of this plan. One card in the bank is not a bad way to start the fight.
