Calzaghe was definitely a very difficult fighter to beat, fast hands, excellent foot work, decent power before his hand issues, very good chin, endless stamina, boxing skills and could adapt mid fight. He could have achieved a lot more than he did, if he only had the ambition and self belief.

But he wasn't without weaknesses. He could be sloppy defensively, often staying in range too long and getting caught. He was definitely susceptible to the right hand as shown time and again by fighters like Hopkins, Reid etc.

Are you kidding me? If you asked how do you beat prime Roy Jones Jr. that would be understandable as he rarely lost any rounds. Calzaghe was not invincible. Hopkins won 4 to 5 rounds. Kessler won 4 rounds. Bika won some rounds. He had a close fight with Robin Reid. Prime Roy Jones Jr would win every round against Calzaghe.

lets put calzaghe threads and 'vitali beat lewis' threads to bed already....

calzaghe didnt fight prime roy and b-hop so theres your answer to this thread...and lewis was given the decision over vitali...theres your answer to that thread

anything else is just people saying 'but...but...but...' because its not in line with their heroes

I think prime Jones is a stylistic nightmare for Joe..

He had faster hands, faster feet, hit much harder, was much harder to hit.. Joe never fought anyone with that sort of dynamic.

Joe was well past his prime days when he beat Jones. Imagine what he would have done to him if he was in his prime.

I think he outworks, and out-hustles Jones, who at times makes Joe look a tad silly (like Roy did to everyone), but over the course of the fight, just struggling to live with Joe's relentless work and continuous punching.

Calzaghe refined his style like a fine wine.. Some of his prime fights were outright sloppy at times. But at the time they fought, Calzaghe was still prime enough to keep one of his biggest strengths, his work rate.. He threw nearly 1000 punches, and didn't stop the disgraceful glass jawed, walking punching bag Jones had become by that point.

Prime Jones was just a different animal altogether, he was actually hard to lay a glove on, and would hit, but not even be there to be hit.. Roy had no reflexes left in 08, which is what his style relied on.. He was like a tri-pod missing a leg.

I think Joe and Roy both prime, would have been an exciting fight.. But I think he catches Joe at some point, and pulls the trigger.. Something he wasn't able to do in 08.

"Stylisitic nightmare" could imply that their abilities were similar, but that Jones' style and skillset would cause particular problems for Calzaghe.

It's really a lot more straightforward. Prime vs prime Jones was a significantly superior fighter. He would indeed be a nightmare for Calzaghe to fight, simply by virtue of being that much better.

In 46 fights with 45 different opponents trying nobody could come close.
Very hard to beat someone who doesnt know how to lose and who could change plan to counter everything that was presented to them

Hopkins and Jones didnt fight prime calzaghe. Calzaghe was closer to the end of his career than either of them and possibly more past his prime with his damaged hands

I like how you say because Jones had speed he would beat Calzaghe. Joe had fought fighters with speed and dealt with them. However, Jones had never fought anyone like Joe. I don't think Jones would handle Calzaghe coming at different angles. People think the quicker boxer will always win, but take a look at Khan, Judah etc. Speed doesn't mean anything when your fighting someone that clever and has amazing stamina, eventually you get worn down.

Calzaghe had many styles and could go forward and backwards.
I saw how Griffin just walked Jones to the ropes, but Calzaghe would have been unloading fast cobinations and changing the tempo which would have confused Jones.
I recall when Jones beat Woods thinking that I couldnt see a way for Jones to beat Calzaghe and that Calzaghe wouldnt just lay there and take shots, he would be landing at will on Jones

I think Calzaghe's relentless punches would frustrate and tire out Jones. How can somebody think a prime Jones with extra speed and reflexes would beat Joe? Joe made a mockery off him and a bit of extra speed and reflexes aren't going to stop relentless combos coming at you.

The only way Jones would win is if he brought a bat into the ring!

Just so you brittards know, it's because you think Calzaghe is LITERALLY unbeatable that everyone hates you.

Calzaghe has NO advantage over a prime RJJ except for his tendency to throw a huge number of worthless pitty pat slaps. You know what's better than 100 slaps in a round? 20 hard, lightning fast power punches; something that RJJ did all the time.

He is quicker than Calzaghe, he is WAY more powerful than Calzaghe, he is smarter than Calzaghe and would absolutely wreck him had they ever fought at 168. As for chins: can we end this "joe has an iron chin" myth? He has a decent chin, but it's nothing great. He's been dropped by nobodies, yet brittards don't ever mention that. Curious?

Keep in mind: no one except a few pathetic brittards believe Calzaghe could ever touch a prime RJJ.

Why are you so mad? :rofl

Roy didn't like southpaws, Roy didn't like high volume punchers i.e Johnson. What makes you think Roy would beat Calzaghe. I mean Jones got schooled that night, yes he was slower, but what makes you think having extra speed would allow him to beat Joe? Calzaghe wasn't in his prime either, he was 36...

Joe's slippery style would ruin Jones completely. Take a look at what Griffin did to him, Joe was miles better than that. look:patsch

Jones would throw everything at Joe, but the fact is Joe could adapt like no other. :good
