Was Calzaghe able to satisfy his promise to "show his boxing skills and talent?"

Yes I think so, showed great footwork and ring craft.

Put his punches together well and even eased off the gas a bit.

But then Roy was a shadow of his former self as we all know.

Tito must be a shadow of a shadow of his former self to look that bad against this version of Roy.

He did what was expected of him.

This win doesnt hold much weight with me in the scheme of things.

I was disappointed with his punching accuracy, far too many punches getting blocked. Although Jones guard is quite good he is very stationary and Joe had all the time in the world to pick his shots.

I think people are putting too much weight on the fight. Jones has been a shot fighter for good 4 years. Winning against a welterweight in Tito doesn't change the fact that he was KO'd twice and also lost a decision to Tarver where he was almost stopped . Clazaghe should have been able to stop Jones and he didn't, his win over Kessler was much more significant and impressive than the Jones fight.

Good grief:patsch :patsch :patsch Man are you one of the few remaining souls who actually don't realize that Joe carried Roy to allow him to end the fight on his feet. He had Roy reeling all over the place from the seventh round on and in the eleventh round you could actually see Joe backing off and trying to showboat to give Roy time to recooperate. You do realize that Roy was Joe's hero, don't you? They are close friends. Joe is a pretty unemotional guy but in their pre-fight staredown the day before the fight, Joe broke into a smile and Roy acted tough for a few seconds and yes he too broke into a smile. These dudes are like brothers. Joe wasn't going to hurt or humiliate his hero but he was going to showcase his skillset. Both these dudes are class acts and I feel privileged to have seen them cross swords.

He performed well enough - but he's always going to get criticised considering Jones is now nothing but a stationary punch bag. If your really harsh you could asked why Joe failed to stop Jones.

He failed to stop Jones because he is a GENTLEMAN and Roy is both his hero and more importantly his friend. Check out the eleventh and especially the twelfth round. Joe danced around so much he looked like a high school girl during cheerleading practice. He actually waited at times for Jones to summon the energy to get out off the ropes to fight him in ring center. Even then he pulled his punches and backed away. Man it was so obvious. The dude was half blind and Joe in the third round after being badly hurt, dominated Roy with his blinding speed and non-stop punching. At fight's end with Roy exhausted and blinded he suddenly decides to get cautious? Grow the hell up!!! He let the old legend go out with his pride intact. Joe is a great boxer, but far more importantly, an old school British gentleman.

For some reason, this performance opened my eyes to Calzaghe's amazing talents. Amazing stamina, footwork, hand speed, reflexes, and throws punches from every angle imaginable. There is a reason why Calzaghe put his chin out there for RJ and RJ couldn't capitalize. RJ was hesitant to let go because he knew he would get tagged. It was embarrassing for RJ that someone would do that and he couldn't make him pay.

The win itself wasn't significant but i finally realize how special this guy is.

Yeah I think he boxed really well. That and the fact that Jones was awful made for a very lopsided fight. But that's not Calzaghe's fault. One thing that was evident though is that Calzaghe has absolutely NO power. More featherfisted than mayweather. Jones was ripe for a KO from the 6th on and Calzaghs was landing at will, but only bloodying Jones's face. I don't think he should fight Dawson, because he wont be able to get his respect, and Chad might knock him out.

Brilliantly stated and I feel exactly the same way. This performance by Joe Calzaghe, especially the third round, when Joe was still hurt and Roy was fresh and superconfident; the way he turned the fight around in seconds was a sight to behold. Joe is something special and a unique talent. Sorry to see him go but at age 37 it's time to retire.
