How Do You Classify Calzaghe's Performance In the Jones Fight?

If he could do something similar to Dawson, then I don't think anybody could question his ability against a top, legit opponent. A guy in his prime who has been tested by the elite of the division.

 

Joe specifically stated before the fight that he was training for the KO - he didnt get the KO.


There were people who would have bet hard earned cash on a TKO, do you feel for them if what you say is true! If what you say is true it makes the fight nothing short of fake and fraudulent to a degree.

If you want to play the British gentleman card, gentlemen don't showboat and mock shot boxing greats like Joe did! If he was a true gentleman he wouldn't have done it - even hardcore Calzaghe fans on here were cringing over it.

Peer over those cheerleader pompoms, and take a look at the last time Joe actually KO'ed (not TKO) someone.

I stated it was a good performance from Joe, I can't say no more. Really, I'm sure some people on here thinks Joe walks on water.

 

Nay, both legends simply fight like that. They showboat. Roy was amused and indeed respected Joe for his showmanship. He actually put his arms over Joe's shoulders at the start of the final round. These are masterclass boxers showcasing their sublime skills in the mecca of boxing, Madison Square Gardens. A few hip wiggles and bolo punches mean nothing to these old pros. Check out the eleventh and especially the final round. Joe backed off bigtime and disguised it as well as he could. They are friends man and what was the point of going for the kill. His idol was half blind and exhausted so he cut him some slack. Man, everybody is so bloodthirsty these days.

Well no-one took the fight serious anyway, everyone knows it was a non event. Ring rankings have just totally ignored it as just that, a non event. Which is a good thing, non live match ups like what we saw Saturday are not what boxing is about.

 

I thought Jones was going to give Calzaghe a beating with his speed and power but boy was I wrong. Calzaghe brought the best out of him and he litterly outclass Jones. Calzaghe did perfect in this fight. Jones wasn't shot, Calzaghe was just too good.

 

A lot of U.S. based fighters, including Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright and a heck of a lot of boxing writers and commentators agreed with you. Now, with Joe's victory suddenly Jones is shot, sucks, blah,blah,blah. Major props for just giving Joe credit for a great win. By the way Jones fought like a champ and hurt Joe bad early. He also made Joe miss early with terrific head movement. He wasn't shot but as you say just got outclassed. Two great warriors and I feel lucky to have seen them cross swords. That kind of talent is very rare.

 

This fight made me appreciate Calzaghe more, and Jones too for that matter. I did not think either fighter would do as well as they did. Jones is past his best but he was not shot, at least until the 6-7th round. That unintentional forearm shot, bone to bone, that put Calzaghe down in round 1 was a KO blow, but Calz. got back up. Jones landed a lot of good shots on Calz., more than Hopkins did, and more powerful too. Jones could have fought like Hopkins and not taken so much punishment, but he went out on his sword instead. I also think Calz. had not grown into the weight with Hopkins but for the Roy fight he looked more fit and well trained. It showed as he moved better, threw more fluid punches, and was hitting way harder than he did against Hopkins. Jones may have even had a chance beat the Calzaghe that Hopkins fought.

It really seems as though all of the detractors are trying all they can to discredit Calzaghe, they just cannot accept the truth, and that is that Calzaghe is a legitimate hall of famer and he's moving up the ATG list.

 

The fight was a disappointment for me.

Calzaghe's showboating took away from his performance, and was unnecessary and at times disrecpectful of a faded great.

Calzaghe was clearly holding back and doing just enough for a decision, once he knew Jones posed no threat other than with the odd pot shot.

He occasionally took some risks, but when it became clear Jones was just happy to survive in the later rounds, the fight became pedestrian.

All in all the fight, was more getting the job done, and not a great spectacle or something I will watch again.

 

No, I was agreeing with him. I said the other guy didn't watch the fight because he said Calzaghe failed to knock Roy out when it was clear that Calzaghe stepped off the gas in the last rounds of the fight.

But all of a SUDDEN he's shot after the Calzaghe fight??? Your right people are funny.......... :smoke

 

Jones looked better than most give him credit for... of course he has never looked like prime RJJ since Ruiz but IMO he looked just as good in this fight than in that win (which I scored a draw) over Tarver.

Jones wasnt the old Jones but he was still a decent fighter that had to be dealt with & IMO Calzaghe put on a showpiece, a real good display that showed his skills, speed & at rare times his power.

Of course he wont get the credit but I`ll take a win over the credit any day.

 

i'd give him a B maybe B+.....

he got dropped again in the 1st round, and he's still as technically unsound as ever......

but as always he showed great punch/slap volume, lateral movement, and showed lots of offensive angles

basically nothing great, but not as horrible as he did against Hopkins....but this was to be expected given his opponent

 

Totally agree, joe could've stop jones but he refused to do it.
