How Do You Classify Calzaghe's Performance In the Jones Fight?

Joe doesn't have the power to stop Jones.....if he could of done it, he WOULD of done it, what fighter passes up a KO win in a fight like that?

When he dropped his hands from the 3rd on and began sticking his forehead right in the middle of Roy's chest over and over and doing his impersonation of Neo from the Matrix, yeah, I was pretty impressed. Amazed would be a better word. Not only that, he did it to Roy Jones Jr.

Now RJJ may be a shot version of himself, but he's still a hell of a lot better and faster than 85-90% of the top fighters out there. I still think RJJ is a top 10 LHW and could probably give Dawson a run for his money. That's the fight I'd like to actually see.

I've not seen Calzaghe "pick his shots" many times in his fights.

His winning strategy is based on workrate and frequent flurries, he doesn't pick his shots.

 

It was a top performance old Roy or not.

Just an interesting info: did you know that Roy threw 475 and landed 159 punches? He threw more than Hopkins, outlanded Hopkins, and was more accurate than Hopkins. 475 punches is above the prime Jones average in 12 round fights and 159 punches landing usually win fights in professional boxing.

This is the reason I rate Joe's performance pretty high. Not only he did took tremendous - say it was and old Roy, of course it was, but the speed and power was there until Calzaghe started to put on the heat - but he made a surprisingly BUSY Roy Jones look like a gun-shy Roy Jones.

Roy threw more punches in the Tito fight than in the Ruiz fight back in his prime days and landed many. What proves me that Roy had plenty left is that he outlanded the Ruiz numbers vs. Calzaghe again, and quite shockingly outlanded Hopkins by 32 punches...

I think Joe performed well overall.

He showed a few areas of his game people don't often appreciate or that go unnoticed. Bodywork was excellent. Also his reflexes and upper body movement. There was a stage where Jones put together 3 punches, and Joe dodged each one. Reminded me of Whitaker for a split second.

My criticism is too much showboating which did little but waste time, and he passed up on an opportunity when he had Jones hurt.

 

Still managed to throw close to 1000 and landed 300+, despite taking off his foot in the last 2 rounds, when he cut his punch stats in half. I'm pretty sure he did not want to stop or badly hurt Roy.

i seem to remember at one point one of the commentators (woodhall i think) said that 'he (calzaghe) let him have that shot' after calzaghe left his chin right in front of roys face for a good 2-3 seconds letting roy hit him with a left hook.

 

he could have stopped jones with a number of unanswered punches if he wanted too (not through ko) but he chose to let roy get through the last 3 rounds out of respect and decided to enjoy and savour what was likely to be the last 9 minutes of his professional career.

if you notice, re-watching the fight jones' body language changed significantly from round 10 onwards. at the end of each round there was bravado between the 2 boxers but from 10 onwards roy cuts the bravado and his body language to joe at the end of the rounds was almost 'i know i've lost, i just wanna get through to the end'. joe knew this and he definitely took his foot off the gas for the last 3 rounds out of respect for roy.
