How do you! classify certain fighter's style? I look at someone like Mayweather, and from the outset, you would say counter puncher, as his game is generally based on bringing you onto his punches, having you create his offense with your aggression, but being a bit more specific, I would say he's a potshotter rather than a counter puncher, as he generally doesn't counter in combination, he tends to counter with more singles. I have always felt uncomfortable calling Mike Tyson a pressure fighter. To me a pressure fighter is someone who tries to stay in your grill(Frazier), someone who looks to cut the ring down, bang your body, and make you expend more energy than you would like by forcing to throw by constantly stepping to you, so they can eventually take advantage of you down the stretch when you start to tire and become a more stationary target. Now to me, Mike Tyson was more of a hybrid between a seek and destroy fighter, and an aggressive mid range counter puncher. Mike Tyson, from the opening bell, seemingly tended to start out in his seek and destroy style, looking for the KO from the get go, but as the rounds rolled on, if he didn't get the Ko, he seemed to be content at times, to lay back slightly, to leave a little space between himself and his opponent, so he had a shot at countering their leads. Any thoughts on other fighters?
the best fighters have something called versatility so you can't pin them down to one style. they adapt to what ever style they face. mayweather is a prime example. he does pot shot sometimes but he can throw combinations, fight off the front foot, and even work on the inside( like in moments against hatton). if you fight in the same style through out youre career you will get found out.
I'd label someone like Margarito as a pressure fighter and maybe even early Cotto as one. Cotto's more of a boxer puncher nowadays
