I was trying to think of ways you could beat a boxer that employs a turtle shell defense ? How could you do it ?
Shots to the body first and foremost. Or if you have a substantial amount of power, just keep throwing right between the guards. Jermain Taylor was able to get his shots through Winky's guard regularly with the big right hand.
JT broke Winky's Shell, by going to the body constantly and clinching before the other person could exchange. Eventually they get tired and will start to have gaps in the defense.
Not an easy thing if the fighter is expert of the turtle defense. But nothing's impossible in boxing. Some suggestions: sick body puncing (well placed half-legally behind the turtle defense), well-timed shots when turtle-boxer opens up (heh, Ottke, Winky and Abraham are all great counterpunchers so counterpunching the counterpuncher is not an easy thing), throwing very straght combos powering through the guard, pressure, pressure pressure on the inside... Hopkins and Hatton would use the grab and ugly inside fight tactic (Nard making the opponent off-balance and landing the nasty short hooks). Mayweather would use some elbow techniques on the inside to create an opening, Pavlik would throw insane amount of straight power punches to break through, Miranda would try to land a sick amount of uppercuts, Calzaghe would give very different angles and create a very high pace, also try to place the quick jab of his. Also, feinting is a good idea, but you need a perfect timing to make an advantage of an opening. But ultimately it really depends on the turtle fighter's and the other fighter's skill level.
with a turtle shell diffense no cant protect ur body as good (unless u got super long fore arms like winky), so go for the body, fire at that soft spot below the rib cage on the side. thats where dela hoya got hit by hopkins Worse comes to worse you make ur own turtle shell defense. how u like them apples:rofl:rofl
Leonard Dorin tried that stupid "turtle shell defense" against Arturo Gatti. The solution was simple and effective. Gatti merely stepped to his left and nailed Dorin with a perfect livershot which ended the fight. The lefthook to the body can be devastating, especially when you don't see it coming.
Winky's got freakishly long arms when measured from his elbow to his fists doens't he? He puts those arms up and he's pretty much covered from abdomen to head.
Miranda was able to get through AA defense in the first fight breaking his jaw. Sometimes throwing wide shots or hooks can get through. The best way to beat someone with a defense like that is doing what JT did to Winky.
Everyone's already said it, but yeah, bodyshots are a must. Swinging for the head will just leave you missing and getting countered. Easier to deal with if you're physically stronger, you can try to muscle them up against the ropes and push apart their arms for shots.
Punching at the guard is a waste of time and energy unless you are much stronger than your opponent physically, although some stupid ass judges score them as points. Body shots. Wide, quick shots. Short hooks. Basically get in before they go into their shell.
start at the body and work your way up......some chavez like hooks behind the elbow... either that or just waiting till he shoots and try to counter punch.....
You make them come to you. Look at Hopkins vs Wright. You get them outta their element. Wright though was different from most turtle shell fighters because he had a hell of a jab and was capable of boxing. But most of the fighters that use that defense can't box worth a ****. Look at Clottey for instance. He can't really box, but he's dangerous as hell if you play into his game and fight him on the inside.
