Why would Evander fight Roy for peanuts instead of the big unification fight everyone wanted to see? Jones had chances to fight Holyfield several times and refused. Just like he didn't want to fight Tyson, Sanders, Lewis, or anyone else not named John Ruiz
the weight was about impossible to take off. he was 200 lbs and had 6% body fat. i still don't know how he made 175 vs tarver and still pulled that first fight off. http://www.secondsout.com/columns/thomas-hauser/jones-ruiz-and-the-roy-jones-legacy1
the jones fight would have been just as big financially as the lewis fight. lewis was an unpopular british champ in the states because of his fighting style. it's impossible for you to understand this because i doubt you're over 12 years old and you weren't alive to witness it.
Of course you would say that!:rofl I bet you were thinking of Calzaghe in his boxers when you made that screen name.:yep:deal
haha! yeah, i wonder why calzaghe never went up to fight at heavyweight? the thought of that makes me laugh.
The Lewis fight hadn't been made yet. And you saw Holyfield's reasoning. Laugh all you want, I'll take that link over your smileys
He could have pot shotted Ruiz just like Jones did. Why were there rounds where Jones either threw or landed in the single digits in punches? :huh
Calzaghe would not have beat John Ruiz, Jones speed and power are what kept Ruiz honest, Calzaghe would not have.atsch
The fight was in talks for almost a year. How old are you? You were probably 10 years old at the time. Do you not remember what a huge fight that was? But a fight with a Glass Jawed cherrypicking Light Heavyweight who wanted to make all the demands and was selling 90k PPV's would have been just as good? Are you serious?
Speed? Yes Jay Nady? Yes Jones power had nothing to do with it. Go back and look at the punch stats. There were several rounds were Jones either threw in the low teens and landed single digits or threw in the single digits. It was a sparring session. Of course a slow plodding flat footed oaf like Ruiz isn't going to beat Jones. He was the perfect opponent for Roy to go up against as evidenced by Roy not daring to fight anyone else at Heavyweight. It was a perfect storm. Jones is going to beat Ruiz 100 out of 100 times and especially if Ruiz is not allowed to do the Jab and Grab.
I am not accusing Holy of ducking, but only insisting that Roy clearly was contemplating fighting at HW.:yep
Aaaaaaaand he did for one fight against John Ruiz. Who just happened to not had a KO in 5 years, was flat footed, slow, had zero skills, and no punching power to speak of and with a referee that for some reason before or since that fight would not allow Ruiz to fight the way he did. What a coincidence Roy fought him and not someone else. By golly I am just so shocked by that. :roflatsch
