Better than Bernard period. Roy whooped Bernard in the early 90s, and Roy whooped him again in 2010. Roy was the Heavyweight Champion of the World. Bernard never was. Roy was the P4P champ for a long time. Hopkins never was. Roy's highlight reel is light years ahead of Bernard's.
He haven't seen and likely won't see a boxer in his prime that sensational again for a long, long time, if ever.
He had unparalelled speed and reflexes, more effective at leaping shots any fighter ever, and freaky power considering he wasn't punching from the foot (range of motion in the shoulders and tendon strength), he seemed to contract every muscle of his body while remaining serenely relaxed; it was just freaky. His combinations and flurries were obscene, esp those quadruple hooks. He was 160-175lbs but looked 126lb on his feet. Athletic, weird, interesting and very, very good, though lucky to catch all the 'names' on his record when they were each at their worst (Hopkins, Toney, Hill, Reggie Johnson) - would it have been a diff story if they were each at their best? Or, if he fought McClellan, Nunn or Eubank? Was he assisted by PEDs? Too many Q marks.
The people talking about PEDs.. hello and wake up. All around us fighters are getting busted. I think we have to be very honest here and say the vast majority of fighters at the elite level are on gear. It certainly didn't do much for the likes of Android Berto and Lamont Peterson. PEDs or not, Jones was a cut above the rest.
Well said!. I always thought Roy had the talent to be the best boxer ever. Combo of speed and power was unreal. I just don't think that he really liked to fight. Also, the Gerald Mcclelland thing really affected him since he was good friends with Gerald. Seemed that his best performances came when he was pissed off about somebody or something (rematch with Griffin) All in all, I just wish he had done more with his talent. Also it is just sad watching him still fighting today. I have all the old boxing mags from his prime and he was always saying how he will never fight past his peak and all that stuff and look at him now. Still, one of the greatest talents in history
ATG. Everyone talks about his God-given talents but people forget the incredible skills and dedication he had. If not for that, he would've just been Zab Judah or something. Student of the game. Probably chemically enhanced. Underrated actually -- people forget he was considered the world's best for about a decade.
Thing is with RJJ, I do not take into account this era he is fighting in, i.e the big losses of late and the dreadful rematch with Bhop. His legacy is complete, he could get KO'ed by Francois Botha tmrow and I would still see him as p4p one of the best of all time. Plus he nearly had Lebedev too.
fantastic fighter but still would have liked to see him fight my fellow pat steve collins. interesting fight!
I feel bad for him. Although he may not have the best competition or era, it was not his fault, like Marciano. He fought and beat the best around in an era, had great defense and had an amazing blend of speed and power. He stuck around too long and that tarnished his record big time. And B-Hop's only great thing was longetivity and Calzaghe beat old legends. These two are not as good as Jones in his peak.
He wasnt the second coming of ray robinson which i think his takent was on that level great fighter just wish he had better comp in his time. I rate him higher than mayweather he was more gifted
