So you do indeed stand by your statement, that basically states Calzaghe should have never been a two weight champ? Yes or no.
i agree with what you're saying here but with jones in the division, hill and maske were no longer the #1 and #2 fighters imo but that's up for debate. in a number of other cases to be considered the linear champ, someone needed to hold all three of the major belts in the 80s and 90s. jones did this of course but dm was wrongfully stripped of 2 of the belts and always had a claim to being champ. a lot of people say it's a shame roy-dm never fought and it would have been great if they would have but imo, once roy would have beaten dm he would have received no credit for the win as usual by most fans and the media.
Hi mate, how's things? I agree with what you've said regarding DM. Look what happened with Ruiz. Roy beats him, and all of a sudden it's a nothing win, and Ruiz was garbage etc. How many other 175 fighters have gone up since? Which fighters today at 168 and 175, look as though they're going to go up to heavy? Roy went up at 34, after 49 fights.
Can you imagine if Roy went after faded DM instead of Tarver? There would have been an outrage. People don't like to admit that Jones-Tarver was the best and most dangerous fight for Roy at LHW at the time.
hey loudon! things are good here. hope you are well. exactly, if this was any other fighter, they would get way more credit than jones does. jones' problem is that he made it look too easy so everyone just says ruiz sucks. ruiz went on to beat rahman (who ko'ed lennox two yrs earlier) in his next fight. adamek is one that went up from 175 recently and has had some success but he had the frame to put on the weight. i like adamek but it shows how weak the heavy division is now when he can move up and be a top 5 fighter but was completely outclassed by chad dawson when he held a belt at 175. it's important to remember that roy was a champ at 160. imagine if ggg moved up and won a heavyweight belt. people would go crazy over that accomplishment.
true. dm was still champ after the ruiz-jones fight but was basically an after thought. dm was struggling with richard hall in two fights around this time and there was no demand for a roy-dm fight at this point.
Everyone knew Ruiz was garbage well before that. He had no power, no skills, and an awful 'Jab and Grab' style that he wasn't allowed to use against Jones but was allowed to use it against everyone else for some strange odd reason. Of course nobody at 168 or 175 is going to go up and fight the 6'6" plus Klitschkos They actually have skills. There isn't a beltholder for someone to handpick right now at Heavyweight but there very well could be when all of Wlad's belts are on the market after he retires. Jones didn't go up and fight THE Heavyweight Champion like Fitzsimmons and Spinks did. He fought John Ruiz NOT Lennox Lewis. It isn't even close to being the same. You are comparing apples to oranges.
Respectfully, the champs they beat were not skilled giants like Lewis or the Klitschko brothers. Spinks was a much bigger fighter than Roy the size gap was much smaller for Spinks, and Corbett was actually smaller than Ruiz.
true no one is going move up from 160 and beat vlad and lennox was the true champ but you're still underestimating the accomplishment. ring magazine named it the event of the year and before the fight jones was only a very slight favorite. with your gift of revisionist history, you say the fight meant nothing but those of us that were following the sport at that time know better. as far as comparing it to spinks and fitzsimmons, a lot of people felt the 35 year old holmes deserved the decision in their first and second fights and fitz was fighting when no black fighters fought for the heavyweight championship. not sure you can be called "THE" man when only white people are fighting for the title.
Oh, the irony.:rofl:rofl:yep Go on, please show your idiotic fanboyism by claiming the reason Jones turned into a human punchbag was due to weight gain and loss, or his age. Then we can add you to the list of fools to laugh at.:hi:
46 - 0. By the way, seeing as you take things boxers say, or imply, or deny so seriously, when it suits your agenda, you ******ed piece of ****. Did Jones ever say " I TAKE STEROIDS "? Cos the cheating lying scumbag filth definitely got caught using them. Gullible moron. As for your other drivel, in 2002 Calzaghe was all set to fight that other big mouthed Yank nonentity Hopkins, who pulled out and fought the dangerous Carl Daniels instead.
No, what you and the other 2 Roid Jones fanboys are trying to spin is quite simple. Fitz took the ONLY available option, Spinks took what was considered the most risky option, Jones took the **** option. Huge differences there.
Roy taking on Lennox would have been a much bigger challenge than Fitz over Corbett or Spinks over Holmes. Roy took the realistic option, Fitz and Spinks options were also much more realistic than Jones over Lennox.
I don't have a problem with it being named Ring Magazine event of the year it was an interesting fight not super exciting but wasn't boring either. I was interested in watching for sure. But, in the grand scheme of things it was just a handpicked or cherrypicked fight. Ruiz isn't ever going to beat Jones the skill level is just too great. Even if allowed to use his illegal and cheating tactics Jones still would have won the fight might have been a little closer but he still wins. It was the perfect opponent at the perfect time for Roy to showcase his ability. Roy did what he had to do and won but we need to remember who it was against.
