If you jab at the left glove, and then lean left going down stairs with a left hook, you better hope he doesn't hit you square on with a counter straight right.
lol, I once kind of flukley hit someone hit a short right as he was preparing a left hook to the body. Gave him quite the shiner :!:
Nothing flukey about that. Just a well timed counter in a place you knew it would be extremely effective. If you hit somebody hard enough doing that, you may well just intimidate him and make him think twice about trying to go to the body again.
If a guy has a tight guard I try and create a bit of space with the jab first and then find the gap down the middle, ie if I have the space, I'll jab to the right shoulder and then fire the straight right down the middle. That or jab to the body and hope he drops his guard and then fire the right hand over the top.
I probably shouldn't even be giving advice cos I don't box but hey, I watch a lot of boxing. @ Greg - How long were you training in the gym before you started fighting competitively?
but its really fast and as your leaning left your leaning outside his right so its hard for him to hit your head i was trainign about 6 months but i was the most dedicated in the gym by a long shot (not bragging) Tommy ge down to Repton in Bethanl Green its a real good club
I suppose. If your leaning your head left, then I suppose he can't really hit you square on or to the left side of your chin which is where it would be most dangerous unless he adjusts quickly in time to step right and create the angle. Your probably still exposed to the left side though, but atleast that allows you to roll the punch should you see it coming. Ah right cool. I'd hope to be fighting within sort of 5 or 6 months if I go to a gym. And yeah I'll give it a thought, I'm moving in a couple of weeks though, not far away it's basically about 10 minutes away, but where I'm moving to there's a youth centre with a boxing gym literally 5 minutes walk away so I might end up going there. To be honest I'd much rather go to a gym with a mate or something, I'd be worried about going there and showing myself up and being miles behind everyone else.
You will inevitably be miles behind I'm afraid, and there's no changing that. Just show character, perseverance and listen to your coach and you'll catch up in no time.
im pretty sure eddie futch once said if a kid comes in to my gym with his freind or with his parents i tell them to get lost but if i ked comes into my gym by themselves i know their going to be a fighter i joined a gym by myself then my brother and his mate followed afew weeks later Tommy you will meet people so in afew weeks you will know everybody
I suppose it's put my off due to the fact that the one time I did actually go to a gym the coach was an arsehole, and completely frooze me out even though I'd signed up. Didn't say a word apart from being a ****, so I just warmed up, worked on the heavy bag for a couple of rounds, then a double ended bag, then one of the guys turned up and the coach told me to get off. In the end, I just stuck to doing weights for about half hour and then went home and never went back. I'm probably one of those people that needs the security of a good coach and an all-round decent guy. I think a good relationship with your coach is very important. I certainly wouldn't ignore someone completely and tell them to get off the equipment when another guy turned up like that **** did.
Teddy Atlas said this i thought, cant remember. Well it was in his book i think. Futch had the Gleasons ? Whaaever coach it was i think/remember it was regarding coming up the stairs. Tommy, just go down bro, you will love it. You will walk out of there hell happy :deal
You will earn it, even going every night and not really learning for example. A decent coach/trainer will see this, he will see your effort basically. You wont get 1 2 1 the day you walk in but the more you go the more he will have time for you :thumbsup
