Very very true. So why does poor judging in my MMA get overlooked by consumers but absolutely hammered by boxing fans? My guess is that it has more to do with the fact that even in poor MMA judging, there's a semblance of notion as to how the fight is scored. The biggest argument is the takedown vs effective boxing argument..and which scores more. In boxing it seems like scorecards are filled BEFORE the event begins sometimes.
Very good question, I think it also helps MMA having only 3 or 5 rounds. Twelve rounds allows idiot judges 12 chances to **** things up instead of 3 or 5. I was really encouraged after the Pac-Hatton fight, I saw a few people I was friends with on facebook actually having discussions about it. This was the first time I've ever seen that. There was the same thing for UFC 100. A big time boxing event still gets kids attention and thats why theres gotta be new stars.
Right which is why the sport has to be more accessible as well. Anybody miss the days of consistently open work outs for fans to come out and see fighters work out or spar? I always thought that was such a great idea...I mean if I'm a promoter, I'm holding tons of open work outs and charging people (except for kids) as they come in. That way you promote and make some coin ya wouldn't of made before.
My best friend(VP of boxing club at his college) has spent part of the summer training at the same gym as Miguel Cotto in Tampa. They close the gym or else I would've been there most days I was home.
My dad watched Ali train a couple times when he was a kid up in Ligonare(spell check), which is a couple hours away from Pittsburgh I think. Ali had a camp up there, where he used train and live certain times during the year. Seeing Ali train would of been something special.
