A great victory over one of the very best boxers of that generation.

Give me results not style points.

That is the bottom line really. But everything the poster said came back to haunt RJJ. Later in his career. He was never fundamentally sound. It looked great when he was prime, but the many he started to slow, well we saw the results. His fight with Toney was a prime example. Because of athleticism he was able to get away with leaping hooks, lack of a great jab, hands held low. Also, It was one of the 1st indicaters about Toney and his lackluster altitude. It would be reapeted many times after that fight. And really, in my mind at least kept him from A.T.G status. If he had the dedication of Hagler we'd be talking about him with the Monzons, Hagler, etc. He certainly had the skills.

It was a footwork fight. And when did the good footwork guys ever suit Toney?

    Agreed.

Just watched an old RJJ interview with Kellerman. Max asks him about pulling away with his hands down, and how much does RJJ's speed allow him to get away with it. Roy said "lots of it". I think he knew he was toast when the reflexes went.

Also, you will NEVER see a schooling like RJJ/Toney at that level, regardless of Toney's eating habits.

    Pure masterclass.

Roy had flaws but he got away with it because of his natural ability.
