How do you rank Shannon Briggs as a puncher?

Lewis got caught with his feet square on and was knocked off balance.

Briggs didn't really make much impression with his power against known contenders of his era. His best wins are probably vs a totally shot Mercer and a 12 round KO against Liakhovich.

His high KO ratio still has to be taken into account especially the amount of early stoppages he had even if they were against limited opposition.

I agree with the general opinion that 7.5 is about right Briggs was a good puncher but not elite.

True. And while I realize that Shannon Briggs all time first round KO record is padded, that’s still a hell of a feet. Especially considering that he was pretty old when he accumulated a lot of them

I thought Lewis was quite badly hurt. I don't think he slipped or was off balance. He may have been caught square but he was hurt.

But his era had the largest collection of heavy punchers in the division. So, historically he has to be pretty high.

True. 90's had more big hitters than even today. Tyson, Lewis, Tua, Morrison, Ruddock, young Wlad, Sanders etc. Hell even guys like Mercer and Witherspoon could hit pretty well.

He was a heavy puncher for sure, and it's easily shown in all of the first round KOs of tomato cans, but he just didn't ever learn to use it.
He had great potential with his straight punches, but would always resort to fighting like a kid from the hood. Just watch how he gets outboxed and then gifted a draw against Frans Botha (Botha wasn't a horrible fighter, but it shows you my point).

I'm gonna give it a six. Imo, he has slightly above average power but not so noteworthy. I'd say his punching ability is very commendable.

Guys like Brewster, Sanders and Peter probably hit harder.

Feels wierd reading a BE post where he speaks absolute sense and I agree with pretty much all of it. I wonder if this isn't some cunning 'reverse troll' or a long term troll project :eyebrow2:

I think that Seamus is forgetting about the ULTRA WATER that existed only in the 70s and conferred hitherto unseen powers on that era's fighters ;)

I'm hoping this turns into a very long lounge thread to write in Briggs as a 2024 candidate.

At this point I'd vote for Briggs over the other two choices :D
