Thanks, but am I not absolutely wrong about Nat Fleicher. He would rate Sonny much lower than I have. And he was on the ring apron to witness most champions. One of my rules is to make Top five ATG a champ cannot have been knocked out with the title at stake before a comeback. That excludes Liston, Jack Johnson, Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier and Lennox Lewis who were all more dominant than Sonny Liston. Remember Sonny only shared an era with Floyd and Ingo. He might have been the best of the three but this period is remembered as the "Patterson, Johansson, Liston era". Not "The Sonny Liston era". I have never heard that praise used. So in regards to domination Sonny is eclipsed by Johnson, Tyson, Joe Frazier and Lennox Lewis.
I personally think Liston cleaned out the division much more decisively than all those men, (possible exceptions being Lewis and Johnson) I've heard most people call it the Liston era. You're the first person who I've heard say otherwise.
There was no Liston era. There was the Patterson-Ingo tango that took up three years then Liston beat Floyd at the end of it. Liston beat Machen Folley and Floyd. It's great but That's it. Other wins Sonny had may have been spectacular but they were not elite championship level wins. Everyone decent beat those guys too. To really clean up Sonny needs to have beat Moore, Harold Johnson, Ingo, Cooper, Terrell and Jones. He would have most likely cleaned house if given the opportunity but why should we have to assume this when so many other champions have matched these extra wins?
Here's my latest ranking. My rankings are based solely on winnability and are very fluid, they change as and when I consider fights I'm detail. I've ranked this way on a whole scale basis for about a year and hopefully my rankings settle down soon. But as it is: Ali Louis Liston Lewis Holmes Tyson Dempsey Foreman Frazier Marciano Holyfield Johnson Vitali Bowe Wlad It's my updated list from today. I've watched a lot of HW fights the past few weeks and this is how i see it right now. The only name I'm really unsure on is Holyfield, I had him number 4 previously but there's something I just can't quite put my finger on about him but against the top level of HW fighters I tend to picture him having the tools to succeed but being dragged into a shootout and getting knocked out, when I say the top end I mean everyone raneed above him apart from Ali, Lewis ad Holmes who I envision outboxing him.
