depends on what era..obviously he will present problems for other smaller era fighters, hes certainly better than Carnera..however a guy much smaller with skill who hits harder like Haye is clearly to much for him.H2H thers many guys who would beat him..Valuev himself has a poor k.o record,he would have been good in the 60' and and so but 70's forward boxers would eat him up.

Was Valuev ranked any higher than top five by Ring, ever? I think that's about right and he'd be able to recreate that in most eras, probably as high as 2 or 3 in some eras.

He's tougher head to head than people think. He was never knocked down. He was stunned a time or two but not that badly. He had decent fundamentals. It's hard to assess him because his resume is not at all deep...we didn't see him against enough top tier guys. But I think he's a threat to many past champs because of his durability...you definitely need to pack a lunch if you're fighting him.

Think he definitely gets underrated a bit.... But yeah he's no great. His resume isn't actually that bad. He arguably beat Haye, robbed Holyfield though.... For a man his size/frame he did everything he could.

Valuev had great size (height, weight, reach) and iron chin.

That's more than enough to be dangerous even with poor skills and zero speed.

Ustinov is another example (though not as tall)

Tye Fields was shorter and had glass in his chin, so he failed when he stepped up.

not bad. a contender in every era, a fringe contender in the best ones, but a brief titlist in the worst ones like today.

The one time he actually impressed me was the Liakovic fight. He looked quality that night.

For his size he was very good. But that's about it. In the scheme of things he was nothing special.

An interesting question. Valuev fought in the absolutely largest era ever seen for heavyweights. Had he fought 30, 50, or 100 years ago his size would be an even bigger advantage.

Valuev had some skill, a pretty good chin, an all right jab, and enough power to hurt you.

I think this would be enough for him to be in the top ten in any decade, but I don't think he beat the better champions. He would however have a chance to upset the better champs with less than stellar chins.
