How do you rate Bas Rutten

A pioneer and one of the first strikers that I can think of who did extremely well in the sport. Also one of the first to cross train I would think. Came in as strictly a striker, was submitted a few times then decided to learn submissions himself and finished his career with more submission wins than KOs.

Also had a huge winning streak spanning from 1995 to 1999, finishing with wins over Frank Shamrock twice, Maurice Smith, Guy Mezger, Kohsaka, Randleman, Funaki etc. I'd say he's an ATG.

 

Legacy:
Pioneer, Legend, First ballot hall of famer if you will.
Essentially brought striking to Japanese shootfighting (Schilt deserves credit too, but Bas was earlier)

Head to Head:
Very good, but more questionable, great against guys who were very good grapplers without much takedown ability, great against wrestlers with limited grappling, could win the striking contest with just about anybody in his day, alot of people in hypothetical historical matchups.

 

Also, Bas was a very very entertaining commentator and, even though I don't feel he broke down the aspects of the fights with the detail of Rogan, he did a very good job.

His show on HDnet isn't too bad either. Even after he retired as a fighter, he is making an impact on the sport.

 

very impressive striker with great power but people rate him too highly due to his popularity. in his first fights in the ufc i felt he lost to randleman and was getting his ass handed to him by the japanese guy..

 

I wont have a bad word said about his teaching videos. There the stuff of legends. Man i ****ing love that guy. :love

 

Randleman won that fight. The decision was utter bull****. Bas had no answer to Kevins wrestling. Dont believe me.. compare his face with Kevins after the fight.

 

Bas is THOUSAND times the commentator that Rogan is. Please do not put his name and Rogans in the same sentance. :fire:nono

You need to rewatch that fight. Kevin won that fight clearly. Bas spent the entire fight on his back and couldnt even pull guard.
