I have always rated him around the level of Nino Benvenuti, Oscar De La Hoya, and Felix Trinidad as one of the best junior middleweights. For most of his career, he's hovered around the bottom or the middle of the p4p top 10. Blowing him up to be the p4p king like they did because he was the biggest draw was something only the casuals fell for. We all saw him get several gift decisions that he should have lost. Golovkin x2, Lara, etc.
I'm pretty certain the things that are being said have been said about Canelo for years. People have always questioned how good he is. The resume speaks for itself but the eye test is what people are really focused on.
Canelo is still a great fighter. His body of work is impressive and he was part of many good fights even if he got gift decisions. Everyone loses in the end. Father time catches up with everyone.
Canelo thinks Crawford is even better than Floyd just goes to show how hard Bud hit him in the head . This content is protected
Canelo is a really good fighter, a great fighter who post the Mayweather era became the face of boxing alongside Anthony Joshua.
True. He did become the face of boxing alongside AJ. But his abilities were not among the best in the sport. I think Crawford, Inoue, Usyk, Beterbiev, Bivol, Kovalev, Briedis, Ward during their primes were all better than Canelo. He was definitely not among the very best.
The loss doesn't look good for him, but people forget Canelo also isn't a natural 168'r and fought under MW. He's not much different in size to Bud, just he bulked up. Bigger, but not massively so. So let's not pretend he had the size advantage of Jack or Kessler over Bud. Or that Bud beat a big, rangy natural 168'r which he almost certainly wouldn't. To put it in perspective, Groves thought Jack was huge and Groves was a big SMW. Jack went on to fight at cruiser because he WAS huge. Canelo didn't have the advantages of a real SMW, that's the point.
Never said he was the best as there is a clear difference between being the best and being the most popular.
I've always considered Canelo to be very good in most respects without ever really excelling at any particular aspect. Enough to get him by 95% of opponents, but would probably always lack something to get him over the line against the absolute top bracket elite fighters. MW & SMW has been a bit of a joke in terms of top fighters for sometime.
A pretty good fighter as I always said but not a Great. Very opportunist career who despite the hype actually regressed after 160. He has been a B level fighter for years now.
