It was a good win by hagler against a solid Duran, but ..... somehow it feels way less satisfying than other hagler fights :huh Perhaps, as it has been pointed, it has to do with the fact that Hagler had all the natural advantages, so his victory was "almost" a given.
Conservative, did'nt take too many chances, but why should he? good big'un beats a good little'un, but i don't think it reduced the chip on marvin's shoulder, it just added too it:smoke
Hagler was expected to destroy Duran. Roberto was having a bit of an Indian Summer, though. He was just coming off his win over Davey Moore which had been his best performance since Montreal three years earlier. Hagler scored a workmanlike, clear victory over a still effective Duran.
Hagler faught to cautious, actually both of them did.duran was maybe alltime lw champ but marvin I think could have taken him out with a sustained attack.Duran has to be given a lot of credit, the ******* was tough, smart, knew what to do & what not to do agaisnt bigger stronger man. Hagler faught the same way against leonard ,far too respectfull.Thinking old school, when you had to BEAT the champ, like happened to him earlier in his career...
I thought it was a clear win for Hagler ,but hardly an awe inspiring one,he showed Duran too much respect ,and was way too tentative. Another day in the office type of defence. Duran got by on bluff ,smoke and mirrors ,in the latter stages of the fight imo.
Yeh, i'am with yer here, i avoided the result as well, jeezus i was in a sweat all the next day, obviously my heart said duran but my head always said it's got to be Hagler & it was about 6pm when the boozer opended & landlord said that duran got pipped on points, i thought WOW I was relieved as we all knew back then that Hagler was the undisputed beast & it cheered me up no end when i found out that Roberto had really given Hagler a hard time & survived unscathed + i picked up a few quid from the resident Leonard wanks who all chorused that Hagler was to big & would spread duran all over the canvas. It's amazing the amount of new fans that duran picked after it was shown on ITV on the following monday, mostly all casuals as they were all impressed at the way duran showed the grit & savvy to **** marvin off + that defiant stance & glare at the end of the 15th & who else would have the balls to walk across the ring at the end & wave their hand into Haglers face & say "You're no great champ" not many casulas had heard of duran as he was from the 70's B/W tv era & ITV got about 7 million+ watching it at 10.30pm It was on the plane to vegas in 89 for the uno-mas fight when i went up & down the plane like an SS camp guard looking for escaped jews asking all aboard were they going for Leonard or Duran & most of the duran fans had 1st seen him against Hagler & obviously were converted & as i said back then everyone knew that Hagler was the guv'ner. I can see how the judges may have sided with duran a bit as he made hagler look pedestrian & hesitent in some of the rounds, hagler was a bit shocked like everyone else who thought that Duran was meant to launch himself at Hagler instead of adopting the countering tactic, proved smart in the end, duran was no mug, he knew he was to small to have any real effect on Hagler, but when duran did open up it just sent Hagler into his shell:scaredas: as we know it neally cost him his title which would have been robbery but we've seen a lot worse:bbb
Hagler did not fight to his best,m, but he still won & that's the mark of a champion, the mark of a great fighter. In a nutshell, Duran is one of the very best P4P fighters of all time & Hagler beat him, so the win commands respect & praise. Yes, Duran was not boxing at his optimum weight, but was still a foce at the higher weight. It was a close fight, but the decision was not disputable imo! Both are great fighters, all time greats!
Hagler was too respectful and didn't fight his usual busy fight. Had he been more aggresive he would have stopped Duran in the mid rounds in an easy fight.
