Duran had just come off a valiant effort against Hagler and a solid win over Moore. Hearns was always going to be a monster for any version of Duran, how do you rate the win? More on Duran being undersized, or Hearns being that good?
A great win for Hearns, but he caught Duran at the right time though. His bank account was full of cash and his partying was in high gear. As Gil Clancy at ringside said,"Duran never had it from the opening bell" Now that's on Duran not being in shape mentally or physically and Hearns made him pay big time.
The defining win of Hearns career ... possibly the most devastating KO of all time on film ... I don't buy any Duran was not in it crap .. he just went a very competitive 15 with a prime Hagler ... simply a matter of styles ... Hagler showed more courage in the Hearns bout than before or after by going balls to the wall in the opening bell against Tommy after that display of insane power ... what a chin Marvin had ...
Duran not being ideal because he had money in his bank account is a new one, I have to say. Anyway, excuse-making marathons aside, Duran was absolutely obliterated and this was around the same time he was giving Hagler all he could handle and ending Davey Moore's career. Hearns was obviously the bigger man, but it's a hell of a win. Nobody else did that to Duran.
Duran was past his best age and weight, sure, but had proven against Moore and Hagler that he still was a very good fighter, and Hearns just smashed him. Of course it was a great performance.
One of the greatest wins in history given how it was achieved and everything we saw from Duran both before and after. It's automatically in the top 10 KO's ever IMO, for starters.
Imo his best weight class was a class down or two, but it was still a fine redemption with the Moore win and Hagler performance.
It’s the best win by any of the Fab 4 (I prefer five with Wilfredo even if Hagler didn’t fight him) over any of the others. It is, as suggested by @Dynamicpuncher above, probably the best win at 154 pounds in the history of the division. As always, there are the ‘well Duran, see, he wasn’t really himself’ excuses like always when he lost a fight, but in this particular case I really don’t see any different outcome between these two no matter what … certainly not at this weight (where, as it has been pointed out, Duran had a few fine performances). Even at welter, I don’t see Roberto ever getting past Tommy’s jab without running into that poleax of a right hand. Styles make fights and Hearns is a nightmare matchup for Roberto, as we saw.
Do you think Hearns beating Duran was more impressive than McCallum's wins over Julian Jackson and Dinald Curry? I don't see it. Duran is no doubt an atg but his best days were clearly behind him. Jackson and Curry were in their primes and killers when McCallum took destroyed them.
Yeah I do Jackson was green when he fought McCallum, and Curry was not the same fighter after he lost to Honeyghan. I think destroying Duran is historically a much better win.
This was not a great win. It was certainly an eye-catching, highlight reel win with a stunning, sudden KO but there was nothing great about it from a historical perspective. Duran had already lost to Leonard, Benitez and Hagler. He also threw in a sad, clunker of a performance against a very motivated Kirkland Laing. Hearns reach advantage was immense and, sadly, I just couldn't see anything but a KO loss for my favorite active fighter. I didn't expect it to be as vicious as it was but I knew a knockout was coming.
It wasn't so much that Duran lost to Hearns, it's HOW it happened that puts this on a different level. Jackson was still a bit green and Curry's balloon had already been burst. Neither had anything approaching the staying power and reputation Duran had built by that point.
