I personally rate him very highly. He is my favorite boxer of all time. I was always amazed at him for his given talent and how he was able to compete from 160 all the way upto Heavy and was never a big man in any of his weight classes. He is a throw back fighter who would of done well in any era. Head to head I think he is competitive with any middleweight or super middle in history....IF he is at his best.
Love the guy. Great defense. Great heart. In some sense, as great as he was, a could-have-been. If only he had adhered to nutrition.
Staggering boxer, one of the most pretty and effectively sound pugs of all time. I can’t think of anyone more enjoyable to watch. He was a real fighter.
This. At his best, middle weight and super middle especially, he looked fantastic. But at his worst, especially bloated and plodding, not very nice to watch.
One of the best defensive fighters that ever lived and also one of the toughest. 30 year pro that was never stopped and fought at the highest level. Not too many guys you can say that about.
'Among' the Best... just like thousands of others. 150 Years of Boxing History, with thousands of Champions, Contenders & TOP Noted fighters. So like so many others, Among the Best!
A truly well honed and great and natural born fighter from the waist up but obviously hindered by mental inconsistency, poor dedication in terms of fitness and bodyshape and slowish feet presenting difficulty against certain styles, more specifically swift, smart movement to his right. Love watching him at his best.
One of the best of the last 30 years. I’d rate him higher H2H than legacy purely because he threw away about 8-9 years of his career by losing focus. His indiscipline was his major flaw. In almost every other department he was top notch.
Great talent, highly skilled, tough attitude, poor discipline and training habits. I was James Toney fan and don't knock him for losing to Jones at 168. I was disappointed in how he reacted to it. He didn't have the same fire in the ring. The fact that he talked so much shi! To Roy Jones but never got in shape and earned a rematch at 175lbs or whatever. He used the weight as an excuse. On his best day he can beat alot of good fighters but he would never be dominant.
I think he rated high p4p but probably not too terribly high in any single division. Although he did have a pretty awesome record at middleweight
