How do you rate him as a contender? Do you think he had the potential to have a better career than he did?

Born in Szőreg, a southeastern suburb of Szeged in southern Hungary, Bugner and his family fled after the 1956 Soviet invasion and settled in Britain.

Sort of had all the tools, stamina, endurance, very good chin, could withstand punishment, light on his feet good jab, BUT dont think he really liked the fight game ! Possibly the demise of a fighter he fought when starting out may have had more effect on him than we give credit for, shame because if was aggresive, and could punch his weight, who knows.....

Good boxer. The Klitschko of his era. Obviously Klitschkos had more drive and fought in a weaker era which is why they went further. But on a base skill level Bugner was on par with W.Klitschko and slightly above V.Klitschko.

Actually that's a good comparison Dino, never thought of it like that. But yes, certain traits of Bugner you can see in the K bros. Tho I can't see Wlad going the distance with Joe Frazier!

I rate him as "just happy to be there"...to paraphrase him.

Get real. If he was the Klitschko of his era, he would have been a dominant world champion. He wasn't.
Bugner was nowhere near the level of the Klitschkos.

Like most brits about to retire and looking for a quiet uneventful place with a warm relaxing climate to see out their remaining days in a rocking chair looking out at the sun setting over the sea, Joe chose Australia.

Once he settled there however, even though he was pushing 75 years old, he found that he was still the best heavyweight boxer on the continent and so couldn’t resist making a comeback and making some easy money. Thus the legend of Aussie Joe was born even though it was thought that most Australian men still preferred to be called Bruce.
