I was looking at his record the other day and I noticed he went 27 rounds with Ali, 12 with Frazier, 12 with Lyle and 12 with Cooper. How good was his chin?? What would have happened if he fought prime Foreman? Would prime Foreman have stop prime Bugner??
Pretty good chin, although Frazier did almost knock him out in their fight, (and probably could have done so if Frazier hadn't been a great sportsman) I think it's likely that Foreman would have flattened Bugner though. Bugner was too slow and too prone to leaving his defense somewhat open. Here's what I meant about Frazier: (9:30) [yt]M2VlPnMUNKI[/yt]
bugner took heaps of huge shots from frazier but didn't flinch to most of them. they were flush shots that would have ko'd nearly everyone imo.
Definitely an iron mug. You could almost hear his teeth clattering and the punch echo off Bugner's jaw when Joe popped him. Woulda loved to have seen Frazier land those types of hooks on Foreman, but it was not to be.
He was one of Cooney's main sparring partners for the Holmes fight and I am not sure Cooney ever put him down.
Day after ali fight he was in the hotel swimming pool relaxing chatting up lasses, like he had done nothing hard at all, sad he never seemed to want to win, ali was sleeping in his room after the fight, joe did just enough not to get KOed in big fights, imagine he had been a hungry type guy with that chin and fair punch
Bugner had pretty decent hand speed and never really threw punches properly with bad intentions as they say. he never really liked boxing and was happy to throw punches to scores pts and make sure he was not in a place of danger himself. Thus his mostly negative style I do think though that foreman would of stopped him but his chin was pretty good
