I hate to disagree, since he's my favorite current fighter, but IMO JMM should just pack it in and retire gracefully.
he isnt done yet but it will be interesting to see how he performs next. However the man has only clearly lost to PBF. IT can be argued that he beat the #1 p4p 2 times. HE needs one more top victory to be a mid level ATG in my book. One more title at 140 will seal the deal tahts for sure.
Just about a low-level ATG. If the judges actually went his way once in a while, it could easily boost him up a LOT of places. Pacquaio x2, John? They're really good wins.
If Morales and Barrera are considered ATG's, why shouldn't he be as well. JMM is right on their heels imho.
Anyone else want to put in a word for JMM? For the record, I voted Low-Level ATG, although I could be convinced into putting him as a Mid-Level ATG especially if he continues to fight good opposition. If Marquez fights and beats Hatton and Malignaggi, I will be convinced. JMM's resume is approaching that of Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales. JMM's recent rise to the lightweight division with wins over Joel Casamayor (perhaps past prime JC, but JMM isn't actually prime now either), and Juan Diaz, and his lost at welterweight to Floyd Mayweather Jr., shoots his resume up high. However, he did have that lull in the middle of his career, and some losses (some viewed as controversial).
Fringe hall of famer/low-level ATG (what's the difference really, anyway?). I hate to say it, but what were his best wins? Went only 1-2-1 against future hall of famers, and the win was over a shot Barrera. 7-2-1 in title fights. 8-4-1 against guys ranked in the top 10 in his weight class. Won titles in three weight classes. He fought very close twice with Pacquiao, but it's the close loss and the draw that gets him into the Hall, and he probably won't get there the first year he's eligible. This is assuming his best days are behind him, which they almost certainly are. I think he can beat Katsidis, but he's at the age where a fighter his size starts to fade very very quickly. I find it interesting that there's such a big perceived gap between Marquez and Ricky Hatton. Look at their careers on paper, and there are a lot of similarities.
nononono Although Mugabi put up a great fight he was Stopped there is a big difference. Where as Marquez lost a controversial decision and drew with ATG Manny. Marquez good wins. Barrera w12 good wins as Barrera was fading but he was still considered an elite fighter. Juarez- dominate Win against a young hungry contender Casamayor- Good ko over a rejuvintated Casamayor who had always shown a great chin. Diaz- Great WIn over a prime Diaz who was still considered one of the top 2 or 3 ligtweights at the time Medina- great win over a crafty and Tough Champ Medina whos been around forever and has a lot of good wins of his own Polo- Very good contender who was underrated. Salido- Dominant win over streaking and hard punching Salido who was a former champ Gainer--- Practically chased the poormans Roy Jones out of the ring. Agapito- another good win and Agapito was a pretty good fighter who gave Pac alot of headaches. Chris John and Freddie Norwood- Were both decisions that could have gone the other way. Also beat alot of other solid guys Peden,Jimenez,Gervacio,Jandaeng,Jaxca,Wheeler etc. Mugabi best wins Fletcher - good win against super tough animal Fletcher Greene- Good win although Greene gave him a good scare Guiden- Solid puncher was past his prime when Mugabi got him Jacquot- Looked like the Old beast in this one Rest of the guys were solid but not world beaters Hargrove,Gonzalez And he probably had more big losses than Big wins. Marquez obviously has the much better resume here.
Solid Hall of Fame fighter. Not an ATG I have high standards to consider somebody an ATG, so that is why he does not make my list. Excellent, excellent, Hall of Fame fighter though. Without question.
Modern great but probably not an ATG However he is a lot more deserving than some other modern fighters who are supposedly ATGs
His only real claim to being one of the best in his generation was giving the featherweight version of pacqauio two tough fights, one of which he lost, the other he drew. Hmmm, not exactly ATG material right there. Take the two manny pacqauio fights off his resume, and his 3 best wins were against a shot barrera, an old casamayor and a good but overrated and overhyped juan diaz.......not knocking on the guy but how can some people pick pacqauio apart from his supposed level of competition ( old, shot, drained...excuses excuses ), but JMM defeats diaz and its a great win??? Mid-High level HOF'er Fighting hatton wont enhance his status for me. That's strictly a money fight. Pointless actually.
I'm giving JMM the benefit of the doubt, although others will differ from my view, and I can understand that. JMM is at best a lightweight. That's "at best", because when he fought Juan Diaz, JMM actually looked smaller or physically weaker than Diaz. Diaz was winning the early rounds on pure physical prowess. JMM is also a bit older, and yet he beat Diaz. Also, Joel Casamayor was still a dangerous fighter at lightweight having recently beaten Katsidis who was undefeated at the time, and favored to win against him. Both Juan Diaz and Joel Casamayor, in my opinion, are more dangerous than David Diaz, the fighter that Pacquiao fought at lightweight. David Diaz is also a very good fighter, and a legitimate champion at lightweight, and was still dangerous for Pacquiao (or even JMM) since he's a natural lightweight. David Diaz had also beaten Erik Morales! Of course, Manny Pacquiao went on to fight much bigger fights (even compared to JMM's fight with J. Diaz and Joel Casamayor) against DLH, Hatton, and Cotto. But I just want everyone to have a better perspective on JMM's success at lightweight. I think it's a great accomplishment.
