How do you rate Ricky Burns?

He's already beaten a person many people were saying was the best in the division. Of course Burns beat him so he must have been a bum. Some fighters raise their game when the heat is on. Jim Watt for instance beating Davis and O'Grady. If you had bet on that in 1976 you would still be dining on the proceeds. Eusabio Pedroza made an incredible run of defences, always just doing enougth.

Mitchell and Foster may be able to put Burns down, but can they keep him down and can they live with he's workrate when he's fired up and has his back to the wall.

 

Nicky cook was or is better than mitchel and got absolutely knocked the **** out by a guy who ricky traded with all fight..so stop hating on a guy thats just stepped up to the plate and hardly lost a round out of 24 in last two fights...........english bitter *******s

 

I don't know why people were unimpressed with his performance at the weekend. His hands speed was so good and he was firing in crisp combinations like a dominant world champion, he maybe didn't have the power to knock the man out but Evensen was a game wee fighter, not many would have put him away.

 

To be honest I am not impressed by Burns, and more importantly, by the division he is in. I don't rate that division

 

Burns has the edge on Mitchell IMO but both are wbo level fighters and nothing more. Mitchell particulaly is hugely over rated. As soon as he fought a top class fighter he was smashed to pieces

 

I rate him as a good solid fighter. I don't see anything special about him in any particular department but he's solid in most of them which somewhat makes up for it. I like watching him at times, he can be nice to watch when he boxes but he's easily suckered into trading.

The problem I see with him is when he faces somebody that is extremely good in his particular style its going to be tough for Burns. Whether its a great pressure fighter, a fast speedster, a good outboxer, whichever it is, he's going to struggle against somebody exceptional because I don't think he's talented enough to counteract that. Also, the power is going to be a problem at some point.

 

It's a weak division so I reckon he can make a few defenses against lesser opposition.

But he'll lose when he faces a world class fighter.

 

Impressed when he beat Martinez but as big fights may come not to sure he can preform like that again.

 

Well, as an ESB brit forum original, I told the folks here YEARS ago Ricky Burns would be a world champion, long before he even lost.

The laddie had the natural talent honed under Rab Bannon, & luckily for Ricky he teamed up with Billy Nelson, who took the Rickster onto the next level, & turned Ricky from a classy boxer into a fighter who can hang with the toughest when he gets dragged into the trenches!
I always knew he was world class, & I get an enormous satisfaction nowadays watching the Rickster go from strength to strength, he carries himself like a world champion now, he has that swagger!

How do I rate Ricky Burns though? To put it simply, hes outdone my hero Scott Harrison, the win over Martinez is so huge even I didnt see it coming!!!

People on this forum should be honoured to talk to the ever humble Billy Nelson, the very fact a trainer like him who has a world champ posts here & never tries to claim the credit for himself... when other trainers would be shouting their mouths off... think about it folks.

say what u like about ricky burns but u cant hide from the facts that he done exactly what he had to do against martinez and it paid off big time for him ,weather martinez had a bad day at the office is a another debate, now look at burns vs everson were burns the champion has a bad day at the office hangs in there like a true champion and retains the belt.

Burns done well ,and his performace against Martinez is the stuff of legends...that performance was always going to be hard to follow ... i thought he done well ...the norwegen was up for it and live ...he was no worse than some other opponents we have seen for a first title defence

the one thing i do worry about,and i would like to here Billy's thought's on it (if he dosent mind) is that as a fight goes on ,and in his last 2 fights,Burns seems to get prone to getting cought on the ropes quite a lot ,sometimes even being saves by the bell ,

 

Yeah that's something that worries me as well, he seems to sporadically back up onto the ropes and let his opponent tee off off on him for a bit without firing much back, almost as if he freezes. Surely that's not the best defensive tactic in the world?
