How do you rate the trainer Don Turner?

Everyone knows he was trainer of the year in 96 , why he got it ,and that he deserved it.
What we don't know is, when did he train these 20 world champions? For which fights?
I repeat, you made the claims, I'm asking you to prove them,and because you can't you are faking outrage as a cowards way out of a dilemma you created for yourself!.
Why would I give a dog turd about your opinion of me? I have more respect for my dog's knowledge of boxing than your pugilistic acumen.

You are just about the worst reader of a fight I have ever encountered.

We don’t need to know when he trained or worked with these fighters. If he said he trained or worked with these guys and it’s gone unchallenged by the boxing fraternity then it’s the truth. Until Klitschko says I never worked with Don Turner, this man is a liar, I will take Don Turners word for it.

You know as well as I do the boxing world is a very small clique. Everyone knows everybody in those circles. Boxers work with many different trainers. In gyms everybody mucks in. They try out different trainers.

I’ve known trainers who brought fighters to spar a champion and they ended up taking the champion on the pads. And that’s an example. Especially In Amatuer boxing coaches put up visiting teams of fighters. They stay in thier homes. Cook for them. Rival fighters too. You would be surprised how many trainers only associated with certain fighters have known or trained many others. When I met Manny Steward he told me he had known Ray Leonard since Ray was a kid, before he fought Hearns. He said he even trained Leonard. Everyone knows everybody in those circles.

eg Vitali Klitschko had one trainer his entire pro career Fritz Sudenek.
I boxed with a pretty well known guy once does that make me his sparring partner, part of his camp?
My experience of gyms is that trainers generally are extremely protective of their charges, and suspicious of other trainers.
I watched Holmes v Mercer and McCall with Turner in his corner today , I couldn't see that he did anything that wasn't just right , he looked a bit ham fisted treating Holmes' cut against McCall,[ which I had forgotten about ,] and in another round someone else was doing it, but he seemed to be motivating Larry very well as far as I could see. I don't have a problem with Turner ,I have reservations about the claims you and the kid are making on his behalf and I'll continue to have them until I see something concrete to change my opinion.

Unless somebody comes out and says “Don Turner is a liar, he never trained me” you can’t say anything.

As for needing to see something concrete what exactly are you looking for? Are you looking for footage of him in the corner saying something insightful like “your blowing it kid” or seeing him instructing somebody on the heavy bag in a way that only satisfies you?

It seems very very trivial. Really mr mac it’s a strange position isn’t it?

The answer is no, that is what is strange!
If you happened to be in Joshua's gym and McKraken said," can you take the pads for us",and you did a round with AJ would that qualify you as having trained him as a world champion?

 

JP: So how did you get into training fighters?

Mike McCallum: Ever since I was doing boxing, Eddie Futch said to me I'd be a trainer. I'd say, "What" He said, when you're finished, you'll be a trainer, with the way you do things. It'd take me off guard. I always had different trainers, and everybody did their own thing. But Eddie was a genius. It was a tradition and a strategy and a plan, and he really knew how to prepare you for a fight. He just knew what to do, and that was the way he trained you. When Eddie trained you for a fight, there were two things about him. First, he was a strategist and could draw a plan. And then he'd set the plan in motion in and prepare you for the fight. Now a lot of guys trained me before Eddie trained me, and they did a good job. But I could remember when I'd go to fight with Eddie and I knew I was ready to go 12 or 15 rounds. As a youngster you need to box, but you can overdo it. You can overdo everything. Eddie would box me a certain amount of rounds, and then I'm ready to fight. I was also trained by Don Turner, Rocky Davis, Dave Collins, and them guys trained me and I was ready. I was a perfectionist in everything I did. JP: So who are you working with now? MM: I've got a kid named Julio Luna. He's 3-0, a junior welterweight. You?ll be hearing a lot from him. He's good.

 

Came across an interview where he said that he was with McCallum for his first 18 fights but not after that (didn’t sound like an amicable split). Seems like the Kalule fight would have been the only televised one from that timeframe. I wonder how he would have hooked up with McCallum for his debut and earliest fights though? The geography seems off.

A bit more. Looks like it was for a short spell around 2003 perhaps. Steward then moulded him into what he became.

Klitschko knew of Steward, too; in the 1990's, who didn't? He had followed Lewis's career, watched as Steward molded the 6-foot-5 Lewis into a virtually unstoppable force. But it was chance that brought them together. In 2003, Klitschko was shuffling through trainers, having rotated Freddie Roach, Don Turner and Fritz Sdunek (among others) through his corner. Steward was with Lewis, but a few months after Lewis beat Wladimir's brother, Vitali, he elected to retire. Around that time Klitschko's manager, Bernd Boente, suggested Klitschko give Steward a call.
