Steward and Freddie Roach were both trained by Eddie Futch and learned their own training skills from him.

Yesterday I corresponded with a top US boxing writer on the subject of Turner,he said.

" He is an ornery old bird now, but he did a lot of things right, like making sure Holyfield countered Tyson immediately and pushed him back.He did some things wrong like convincing Holyfield to fire cut man Ace Marotta which cost him,and saying using the mitts is idiotic,Charlie Goldman used them back in the 50's so saying that is idiotic in itself.
He is a good but not great trainer , he's been around for over half a century so he knows a lot,but he is not as right as he think sometimes and that has cost him and his fighters."

From the interviews I've seen and the little I've been able to find out about him,I'd say that is a fair assessment of the man.

It’s best to take the endorsement of actual boxers over the non participant pundits or journalists on the worthiness of Don Turner isn’t it?

The new style of training is not what it used to be and trainers don’t live boxing like Mr. Turner,” “He’s done it all, seen it all, and he loves the sport, so he lives it.” - Jimmy Lange

““When we were getting ready to fight Floyd Mayweather, I wanted to bring Don Turner to the board to train me for that fight,” Corley said. “I said, ‘I want a strict discipline trainer that isn’t going to tell me any lies. I never forgot the way Don trained — the things he had taught me over the years
    ,” - DeMarcus Corley

The writer I've quoted will do for me, he has boxed. I don't know why you would call him him a," non participant" when I never even named him? When did Ray Arcel,Pops Foster,Bill Gore,Terry Lawless,Bill Slayton, and Angelo Dundee box? Should we disregard them?

Of course if the writer I haven't named had called Turner a great trainer, you would be jumping up and down endorsing his insight and wisdom. How totally hypocritical is that?

My word, you are determined on your course aren't you!LOL

Tell me, how did Corley do against Floyd, and why did he leave Turner afterwards?

PS Jimmy Lange is trained by Buddy McGirt! Another who "jumped ship?"lol

You surely remember Buddy McGirt, you mentioned him at the start of this thread ,[though you spelled his name McGurt],he's the trainer you described as a"flash in the pan"!
McGirt was Trainer Of The Year in 2002.
McGirt currently has Sergey Lipinets going against Danny Garcia.

Miguel/Mikey Garcia. Younger brother of esteemed trainer Roberto and father of Adrien Broner.

Danny is the Lego haired son of Angel-dust Garcia and is best known for siring Amir Khan and going life and death with poisonous cherry picks.

Fighter quotes are useful. It's a shame there are so few of them on Turner. Speaking of which, I wonder why Larry Holmes seems to hold him in such low regard?

Was This mystery writer you quoted trained by Don Turner?

Until somebody within boxing comes out and says Turner is a liar or a fraud you will just have to accept that within boxing circles Don Turner is legitimately a great trainer.

No actually, until someone can show me which fights of the following boxers Turner is in the corner for as far as I'm concerned he is just another trainer , the difference between him and the others being he often puts the others methods down.

    Wlad
    Vitali
    Lomachenko
    Pryor

You have already egg on your face from your Buddy McGirt comments , best not to dig any deeper.lol
ps What's Larry Holmes opinion of him?

Being held in low regard by Larry is almost an endorsement, Larry says what he likes about everyone - and he likes what he says about everyone. None of it is personal. What he says about Turner is what he says about all trainers. The exact same thing. What we need in order to discredit Turner entirely is for someone in boxing to say he’s a fraud, but nobody does. This is because at worst Turner is as good as the rest of the best trainers out there.
