Pretty decent and then I talk to someone like my friend Dax who is 71 now and he recites every obscure fact in boxing history and goes on 4 hour diatribes about fighters i've never heard of and then I feel ignorant. I'd say i'm maybe a 3.5. He's definetly a 6 though
He posts on the front page all the time. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=dax+eastside+boxing&btnG=SearchUsually under "Dax Ferguson". I'll try to get him to post in the message board. He usually is busy posting diatribes bashing christianity on message boards, so i'm sure he would post in here.
I think you might enjoy some of Benny Leonard, Gene Tunney, Jack Dempsey, Joe Gans, or Jimmy Wilde clips/fights. Youll be in for a real treat.
I'd say I'm about a 4 perhaps a 4.5 on this scale, though I don't publish any book or articles or any of that stuff. I don't read as much as I'd like on the sport either, but I do have a rather vast collection of fights. I know certain weight classes better than others. Don't have much regard for heavyweights for instance, though it's hard not to know a little abut them given the airplay they receive in every boxing medium. Regarding the publishing of books or articles on boxing, it doesn't really guarantee that your knowledge of the sport is anymore than a person say that is a level 4 by this scale. Many so called historians of boxing investigate certain periods or fighters or some other facet of the sport and publish on it, but it doesn't mean they have a general knowledge of the sport overall.
I'd rate myself a 4 or 4.5 Thats simply going precisely with each category and whats required. Some people I have noticed are underrating themselves. But in no way do I rate myself as one of most knowledgeable posters on here, not by a long shot. I'd rate myself above average on here.
Level 1: Better than the Joe average sports fan reads or watches boxing on occasion. Level 2: Better than your average person who says he likes boxing and mostly posts in the general forum. This person is familiar most or all of boxing weight classes, major sanctioning organiations, and promoters. Level 3: On par with a big boxing fan who watches all the big fights on cable or PPV, frequents a boxing message boards, and sometimes reads boxing material outside the current news paper. Level 4: On par with a young historian who has been studying and watching boxing for 10+ years in addition to everything a level 3 does. Level 5: Collects boxing tapes/dvd, reads boxing books, and can hold his own in a detailed boxing conversation without any computer or book aids. I have shortned level 5. I also collect memorabilia, programs, T-shirts, newpaper clippings, signed photos, have around 1500-2000 fights, and have lots of magazines and books.
level 3 I know more about actual in the ring experiences than i do boxing history trivia, farrrrrrrr more.
I would say I am the most intelligent ever on the subject and at least the equal of the next 100 intelligent folks combined. And then some.
I've only been a huge boxing fan since '05, though I casually followed the sport on a sporadic basis before that...maybe a 2.5. I've lurked the Classic Forum for years for intelligent boxing discussion...I definitely don't know anywhere as much as the crowd that posts here, but I enjoy learning from everyone. Even if it is the exact opposite of what said posts intend, i.e. redrooster.
