Fighter A gets knocked down 4 times, and Fighter B gets knocked down once. This is what happened 8 days ago in Caguas, Puerto Rico when Jose "Wonder Boy" Lopez and Roberto Castañeda met during the first round. Lopez knocked down Castañeda once, and Castañeda responded by knocking him down 4 times. Two of the three judges ruled out a 9-6 round for Castañeda, but allegedly, Gabriel Peñagaricano, changed one of the scorecards after the judge refused to do so (as he asked for a 9-7 score), the other judge did changed the scorecard as he was told by Peñagaricano. But instead of going to the controversy, how did you scored that round?
I scored it 10-6. And let me explain why. Normally, in many fights I've seen that when each fighter gets knocked down once in the same round (like Williams-Martinez I, DLH-Quartey, Berto-Ortiz, Ortiz-Maidana), the fighter who won the round won it 10-9 in each of the those cases. So, as soon as Castañeda knocks down Lopez, and he kept flooring him, he got a 10, but Lopez, since he knocked down his opponent first, loses 1 point for each of the knockdowns, finishing the round with 6 points.
I don’t like the 10 point must system so i would score it 9-5 but in reality and boxing it should be scored 10-6. Fighter A clearly looses the round so its a 10-9 for fighter B. However due to the knockdown fighter B suffered he looses one point for each so that makes it 10-5. Now because you have to score on a 10 point must system (something even boxing announcers seem to forget), instead of taking away a point from fighter B you have to instead give it to fighter A. So we end up with 10-6.
Your first example, is a 10-7 round. That fight should have been a 10-6 round. Even if you scored it 9-5, it doesn't really matter - the points difference is the issue.
And on the subject of Marinez-WIlliams I, the first round should have been 10-9 for Martinez. Martinez rocked him hard before the KD and when comparing the KDs it looked like Martinez was just off balance and Williams barely touched him.
Hasn't the scoring system changed in regards to knock-downs? I could be wrong about this, but if you win a round where you're knocked down, today it's a 10-9 round to your opponent. But it would have been scored 9-9 in the olden days. Right?
