Just rewatched Lewis – Mercer fight. I decided to score it, trying to be as objective as I can. I found that many rounds were extremely close. In this fight, Lewis showed great offensive skills and workrate, he threw good combinations and connected well with big uppercuts and straight right hands. Lewis threw more punches than Mercer. Ha also showed a good chin and was never in serious trouble, despite being stunned a couple of times. Mercer showed iron cast chin as he ate all Lewis big shots like it was nothing. He definitely has one of the best chins ever. He also showed great jab, outjabbing Lewis all night long, despite being much shorter and having much shorter arms. His jab was stiffer than Lewis’ jab. Both were in very good conditions, though Mercer looked overweight. Here are my round-by-round scores: 1 round: Mercer 2 round: Lewis 3 round: Mercer 4 round: Lewis 5 round: Lewis 6 round: Mercer 7 round: Lewis 8 round: Lewis 9 round: Mercer 10 round: even Total score: 96-95 Lewis (5 round for Lewis, 4 for Mercer, 1 even) It definitely was not robbery. Fight was very close and the decision could have gone either way.
i didn't score it ...but i remember my dad watching it recently and telling me he had it a draw ...just too close to call
I had it 6-4 in rounds to Mercer. It was very close and the rounds where very competitive. They should have had a rematch.
Near 36 year year old mercer giving a peak lennox a dead even fight, defintley a dent in the legacy. Mercer at barely 6'1 outjabbed lennox all night. i cant see how lennox could avoid getting outjabbed by holmes and liston.
Er, Mercer had a unbelievably underrated jab. You remember what Mercer did when he was 40 something and nearly completely shot against Wladimir with that jab?
A very close fight that I scored for Lennox but proved how much trouble he had with a guy with a very good jab ... however, Mercer also had an iron chin and took terrific bombs ....
6-4 for Lewis. Outside of the Klitschko fight, this was the only time I recall Lewis with a black eye. Lewis won the more of the final rounds and seemed to want it more toward the end.
I think I scored it 6-4 or 5-4-1 for Lewis. It was close, and could probably be scored the other way within reason, but I thought Lewis pulled it out with superior activity and accuracy in the second half of the fight.
lol I remember my card off by heart : 1 Mercer 2 Lewis 3 Mercer 4 Lewis 5 Lewis 6 Mercer 7 Lewis 8 Lewis 9 Lewis 10 Mercer 96-94 Lewis. Considering the circumstances - a packed crowd of mainly Americans, cheering an American fighter, in the very heartland of American boxing - I thought the judges did very well in keeping their heads. It would've been easy to be swayed by the roaring pro-Mercer crowd and given him the nod.
