Ala mayweather and ortiz last night. I thought mayweather's defensive shoulder roll style doesn't work very well again southpaws because of the straight left, which would be harder to block with the shoulder. Can someone explain

You just roll the right hook and use your right hand to parry the left. Really hard to do though because the left can be hard to see.

Easier against a righty because the right hand is glued up there to defend the hook.

You parry/catch the right jab with the forearm sharp upward motion
You roll the right hook with your elbow up
You parry the cross or ALWAYS lead or move before the cross is thrown
You parry, duck, and move in in rapid succession to shut down offense

It is much more dangerous, but seems doable in the hands of a master of the style. It looks a lot more "blue collar/mechanical" against a soutnpaw. You don't get the fancy looking rolling. Due to the straight left.

The high guard is by far the safest stance. If Ortiz was more skilled? Mayweather would have abandoned it as he did with Judah. Ortiz was just not a threat so he stayed in it.

He stayed in the shoulder roll for better visibility and offensive positioning, and would occasionally switch to a high guard stance as well; but as mentioned above, it's very risky.

I actually think it failed him on the inside during some of the exchanges. He was still dodging or blocking most punches, but some got through due to the angles Ortiz was providing.

Avoid your sholder roll. I'm a southpaw myself and the angles presented by the southpaw render the sholder roll much less effective, the fact is that a straight left cross is wide open for the left handed fighter, your left sholder is not really in a position to do much.

I'd suggest abandoning that, going for the highguard instead, pump the jab repeatedly and take the offensive initiative away from the left handed opponent.

I've found that the high guard work worse for me vs a southpaw. For me I've got to keep my hands below eye-level so I can see that ****ing invisible left lol.

Definitely worked better for Floyd in that judah fight to keep his hands up high though.

    Watch James Toney against Nunn.
