how do you teach young boxers to be more defensive?

LOL my dad and every one of my boxing coaches would do pads with me, even as a young kid, and if i would leak in defense I'd get a big smack.. But that might be a bit harsh >.<

Maybe you could try to get them to throw their punches and immediately bring their hands right back until it becomes instinct. . Don't really know any other ways.

    Good luck!

Let them get punched... or show them how cool defense can be. I've been to youth amateur shows and 90% of the kids there were *****s.

offense-defense sparring drill. one partner can throw punches, the other must only defend.

Exactly. My first coach wanted to improve my defence in close (I was a short heavyweight) so he had lighter weight guys go offence (any punches allowed) while I was only allowed to defend (or in some cases just jab), and also, I had to stay in range.

2 of my nephews have started boxing and they are obsessed with fighting like pacquiao, they think he is all offense!

Light Sparring. Throwing punches at a more experienced fighter and having him hit back when you leave yourself wide open or forget to put your hands up. Really basic, but it's what we did.

Put them in with a heavy hitter, they'll learn real quick. What my coach did was teach me how to feel safe with my hands and using angles. I used to be a straight forward boxer, and now I'm more of a slick technician.

Why would you want them to be 'more defensive?' I'm assuming you don't mean just improving their defensive skills, more like changing their style?

Aggression is a good instinct. And offense is the best defense. Also, you reinforce success...if they're good at being aggressive, make them better at it.

I'd say just devote more time to defense, and also have them spar guys who are better than them. At some point you figure out you can't just go out swinging all the time.

    But don't ruin them!

Its simple.when sparring get your opponent to throw his punches only at 50/60% and your not allowed to puch back.work on catching, slipping, weaving, blocking.look through your gloves & use them as your shields.

yes changing their style, one of them is very athletic and small and great at moving, im trying to get him to be more defensive, the other is kinda tall and stocky and pretty big for his age/weight, his ok with the aggressive style but needs to work alot more on defense.

Why would you change their style? If their coach is fine with it who are you to tell them otherwise?
