It's not easy, not a clear cut as people make it out to be. Lots of variables involved. Its a rare plateau in boxing.

    This is actually true.

A big fanbase I suppose and obviously you have to be very good at what you do.

This right here! Gamboa is good but I don't see him ever as becoming a PPV sensation. I guess it has to do with a country backing you up too. It looks like Khan and Canelo are the next "big things" after Pac and Mayweather. Altough Khan in my book is taking on the best available opponents out there on his weightclass unlike Canelo who is been pampered by GBP.

    1. They have to be a really good boxer (duh)
    2. They have to be active and consistent, they have to back up their hype.
    3. They have to be somewhat likable, yes personality counts.
    4. There needs to be hype around the boxer, and they need to have a large fan-base.

For example Chad Dawson would be a star right now, but he's not consistent, he's not active enough. He seems like a guy who you can easily cheer for, because he doesn't have an ******* personality. Dawson has solid boxing skills, very slick, but he hasn't backed up his claim that he is the best LHW. On paper Dawson is the best LHW, but he hasn't proven that yet.

The point is he's not an *******, he's not a guy you would love to see lose, somewhat like Brandon Rios. The media can't get behind someone like that. It's very rare for boxers to be a PPV star. Wladimir is not a PPV star (in America at least), but he does get a lot of money. And despite Dawson's personality, he has gotten plenty of hype, even you have to admit that.

Didn't work for Mosley or Hopkins now did it?

You need a few factors going for you.
    1. Helps to have a fan friendly style. You want people to talk about your fights after, not leave half way through or chant BORING every night.
    2. You need the right promoter. One who has the resources to put you in big fights or on TV, and will talke chances with you building you.
    3. Charisma. Or if you lack it, act like a fool. Both attract large audiences and brings attention whether good or bad.
