Sexy Sergio Martinez will become a PPV Star if he beats Mayweather or Pacquiao. Mostly cause the world will see how sexy he is.
Sergio Martinez is too late and even if he fights (doubt it) Pac and/or Mayweather and beats them, he won't become a PPV attraction. For starters his promoter is not Top Rank or Golden Boy Promotions. And his age, I give him maximum 2 years tops, maybe less, to decline fast. Don't get me wrong Martinez is my favorite fighter but he won't be the next "superstar". I think the next "superstars" are either Khan and/or the pampered-bum fighting sensation Canelo Alvarez. And we might even throw in there Broner because he has that personality that you just want to see him get his ass kicked, I know I do. Good thing they all belong to GBP :yep
Dawson would never be a star. He can barely speak. You have to be articulate. As bad as Mike Tyson was, he's always been very articulate when he needs to be. He has a fairly large vocabulary and could wear a suit and act normal enough but also be street at the same time. The same with Floyd Mayweather. Chad Dawson can't even put two sentences together without stuttering. Holyfield was a star but that was before he was slurring his words. Now he's not as much of a star, but look at George Foreman? He's a star. Sugar Ray Leonard is a star.
That's how the last two big PPV draws did it. The only other way is to have an extremely crowd pleasing style, large racial/ethnic fanbase in the US, photogenic appearance and the ability to sell a fight in interviews.
sergio beating somebody he's supposed to beat anyway does nothing. all the credit would only go to pac or floyd fighting and beating sergio. sergio can only become a PPV star if he dominates 160 and takes out the kingpin at 168.
damn, this post has broner written all over it. minus the upset of a top fighter can a ko over gamboa or Rios or guerrero elevate him that much?
The stars have to align. All the talent in the world won't guarantee it. Nor will a great personality. Or anything else. It's a very rare occurence. Only a few true PPV kings in boxing in the last 30 yeas.
Get your name out there early to get a solid fanbase, gold medal helps, have one of the best promoters willing to spend money to get you publicity and can get you good fights, have some exciting fights, beat some popular fighters, being charismatic or having a likable personality or in Mayweather and Ali's case being controversial and able to generate alot of hate
