It does effect a lot on him. Ray Mancini and Garbiel Luaras said that they don't want to fight anymore after they knew that their opponents were death at the hospitals.

The first death in the ring that happened in my time following boxing was when Jimmy Garcia died after fighting Gabe Ruelas. I remember Ruelas talked alot about how it shattered him mentally. Here's a recent article about him reflecting back on his career and the impact that tragedy had on him:
