A lot of writers are calling Miguel Cotto a legend, but based on what, exactly? In terms of achievement and resume, I don't have a problem calling Cotto an ATG, but the term legend should be referred to exceptional talents.

Pacquiao is a legend because he's a former flyweight who rose through the divisions (8 weight classes, 5 time lineal champ) to strike fear in the heart of 50-0* resulting in a 5 year duck and 15 bags of illegal IV fluids. Cotto's biggest win was against Shane Mosley (unless you want to count crippled Sergio), but he lost his biggest fights — Antonio Margarito, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Canelo Alvarez. Cotto also lost to Austin Tuna and now Sadam Ali.

Do you consider Cotto to be a legend? What makes a fighter a legend?

I think legends are those who have had entertaining fights, like Naz to me is a legend in the sport of boxing, Khan an ATG even though Khan is the better boxer imo. Does Cotto have entertaining fights, yeah. I think he does have a shout-out for being a legend of boxing in that sense. I'm sure whoever called Cotto a "legend" have a completely different reasoning than me for picking those words to stick with a boxers name.

The list of fighters who have had entertaining fights is a mile long. Would you consider Gatti to be a legend? You could say that Gatti's been in legendary fights, however. The legend status should definitely be applied much more selectively.

Becoming a legend is a combination of H2H ability, resume and fame. I mean you can be the best fighter to ever live and even beat some decent names. But if nobody knows who you are then nobody will give a rats ass. And you're legend will never exist.

    I disagree.

I think history will look back on Rigondeaux as a legend even if he loses to Lomachenko. The guy's skills are otherworldly even though he's largely inactive and been dropped by no namers.

I have no problem with anyone calling Miguel Cotto a legend. Boxing produces many of them.

Now, Miguel Cotto ATG, that's a distinction I would take issue with.

I disagree. This forum will know who Rigo because this is a hardcore boxing place, but this is nothing like real life. Nobody knows who Rigondeaux is and they won't care. It's to care about something if you don't know it even exists.

Since boxing is a dingleberry on the ass of mainstream sports, we have to consider future discussions will be talked about through the eyes of a boxing fan.

Notice how the amount of boxing legends continues to decline decade by decade as the sport loses fans? The reality is being a boxing legend starts with mainstream fame.

Manny and Floyd are certified legends. Yet if I mentioned their names to almost everyone in my office, they will say "They're boxers, right?" and that's where their knowledge ends. Does that diminish their cemented status as legends of the sport?

He was involved in one of the most entertaining fights in history which will still be talked about in 100 years time, yes I would. If that fight itself is legendary, the fighters involved surely must be!!??

So Rios and Alvarado would be legends in your eyes? Their first meeting was exceptionally violent and memorable.
